Staff Selection Commission of India performs the role of selecting candidates for filling up vacancies in various departments under government of India and various ministries. It conducts written tests and interviews for filling up vacancies in almost all government departments and ministries except for Railways for which there is a separate set up called Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). There are regional boards as well which conducts tests and interviews for filling up regional vacancies.
Vacancies fulfilled by the SSC : There are a sea of vacancies which exists in various government departments. However they exists at various levels. Your brother may not be eligible for appearing in all the jobs for which SSC publishes advertisements in leading news papers including Rozgar Samachar and Employment News. These jobs are mostly Non-technical in nature. If you are a regular reader of the Employment News you will find many advertisements published by SSC.
Vacancies such as Assistants in Income tax departments, Inspector and sub-inspector of CBI, Auditors for various departments, Junior Engineers in PWD, Section officers in government Audit departments, posts in clerical cadre etc are fulfilled by the SSC. The qualification is as per the standard determined by the respective departments of the government offices.
Selection procedure in SSC: The general selection procedure in SSC is as follows:
- Selection through short listing of candidates by conducting written test and organizing final selection through Interviews.
- Selection through short listing of candidates by percentage of marks in the required subject and organizing final selection through Interviews.
- Selection through short listing of candidates by percentage of marks in the required subject and conducting subsequent test / interviews
Written Tests conducted by SSC : The tests conducted by SSC mainly designed to test General Awareness, knowledge on English language, analytical Abilities and General Intelligence of a candidate. In some cases where special skill such as typing skill etc are required, there is a test on these skills as well.
The General awareness question paper consists questions on the current events, Indian History, General science, Social Studies, Indian culture, Geography, policy developments and Indian economy etc. The test will be designed in such as way that it touches all the topics. Thus it requires a through study of magazines and other books of general awareness to get good marks.
The knowledge on English language is designed to test the knowledge of the candidate on English Grammar and reading comprehension. The test of English grammar includes error spotting in a sentence, usage of articles, phrases and idioms, voice change, arranging the parts of a sentence to make it coherent etc.
The test on analytical abilities includes questions on algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics etc. There may be various questions such as filling up missing numbers, Fibonacci series, time and speed etc. The test is designed to measure speed and accuracy of a candidate.
Test on general intelligence includes questions on Semantic analogy, Semantic classification, figural patterns, problem solving, coding and de-coding, number series, Emotional intelligence etc.
Since your brother is preparing for the Civil Services Examination it will be a good exercise for him to take a written test of SSC and see how he scores in that. Since a lot of students, job seekers, working class people take the tests which are conducted every year, the competition level is very high.
There are several books available in market like guide for SSC examinations and Solved Test Papers of earlier SSC examinations. He should purchase some good books to know about the question patterns as well the syllabus properly. Practicing leads to perfection hence he has to practice to solve the papers regularly. He should make the habit of reading the books on various topics such as Indian history, economics, geography, general studies etc. Make a time table for study and give one hour for each subject. This practice will increase his confidence as well remove the fear of examination.
