It's a 3-year full time degree program introduced by the University of Mumbai from the academic year 1999-2000. The program is based on the BBA program of International Universities.
The objectives of the BMS program of the University of Mumbai:
* To create for the students of University of Mumbai an additional avenue of self-employment and also to benefit industry by providing them with suitable trained persons. * To provide adequate basic understanding about Management Education among the students. * To give an adequate exposure to operational environment in the field of Management. * To inculcate training in the use of modern technology for the benefit of all parties concerned.
What is the difference between BMS and B.Com/BA/B.Sc.?
B.Com
The professional career options that are open to a commerce graduate are CA/ICWA/CS/MBA. If the B.Com student is not interested in studying accounts and/or not interested in pursuing a career in accounting, then he /she should definitely examine the options of BMS after his HSC. Moreover at any point of time while pursuing the BMS Program, if a student wants to study CA/ICWA/CS the option is still open to him/her.
B.Sc.
The career options for a science student are Medical or Engineering or research in the field of pure sciences, etc. If the student is not interested in pursuing any of these fields then he/she should definitely go in for a BMS program rather than a B.Sc. program.
BA
The options available for an Arts student are Economics, Philosophy, Geography, Political Science, Literature, Sociology, etc. However if the student is not interested in pursuing a career in any of these fields and is interested in management as a career than he or she should examine the option of BMS as an option.
The important thing to note here is that compared to a normal degree like BA/B.Sc./B.Com, a BMS offers more to the students in terms personal value additions. BMS students gain a lot of practical knowledge besides theoretical understanding through a teaching pedagogy of case studies, group activities, project writing, presentations, summer internship, etc.
Moreover if a student is finally aiming for a MBA degree after his/her degree than a BMS graduate has a definite edge over others with a normal BA/B.Sc./B.Com degrees. Though BMS student does not get any relaxation in terms of the selection criteria for a MBA program, he / she is more well prepared to weather the vagaries of the Entrance Test, Group Discussion, Personal Interview , besides the grueling 2 year MBA Program.
The decision of choosing the stream (Arts, Science, Commerce) after CSC(class X th) is influenced to a great extent by the parent depending upon the marks the student scores in the Xth Board Exams. As a result a lot of students get pushed into Science/Arts/Commerce without any interest in the same. BMS is an opportunity for all students, who feel they are in the wrong stream, to change to the Management field and also to make an early start to a management career.
Does a BMS degree give you any advantage while pursuing MBA as a career? Yes, it does, as BMS exposes you to practical aspects like project work, group studies, case studies, presentations, which is part of the teaching pedagogy of a MBA program as also the BMS program.
However, it offers no advantage in terms of the selection procedure for MBA nor do management institutes have any reservations for BMS students.
Can an Engineering Diploma student take up the BMS Program ? No. A student has to pass his HSC exam from a recognized Board in India to be eligible for the course.
Is the BMS Course really good? The design of the BMS program is excellent. The syllabus consists of 70-80% of the current MMS (Master of Management Studies) syllabus of the University of Mumbai.
However the effectiveness of the course depends on the capability of the college to implement the program. Hence it would be better to join the top ranking colleges, as they would have a better Course Execution Facilities.
What is the Course Structure of BMS? The BMS program is spread over 3 years consisting of 6 semesters, leading to a Bachelor Degree of Management Studies.(BMS).
The syllabus of the program is as follows: Semester I (First Year) Semester II (First Year). Foundation of Human Skills I Foundation of Human Skills II Finance and cost accounting Industrial Law Business Law Computer Application In Business Quantitative Methods for Business I Business Environment Effective Communication I Management Economics I Principles Of Management I Production Management Introduction to Computers Environmental Management
Semester III (Second Year) Semester IV (Second Year) Management Accounting International Marketing Managerial Economics II Elements of Direct & Indirect Taxes Marketing Management Export-Import Procedures & Documentation Materials Management Management of Small Scale Industries Effective Communication II Productivity &Quality Management Principles of Management II Public Relations Management
Semester V (Third Year) Semester VI (Third Year) Human Resources Management Entrepreneurship Financial Management Marketing Research Elements of Logistics Management Indian Management Thought and Practices Management of Co-operatives Project Work-I Rural Marketing Project Work II Elective Paper I (Any one of the following) Elective Paper II ( Any one of the following) Econometrics Special Study in Marketing International Finance Special Study in Finance
What is the fee structure for the BMS program? Mumbai University has not laid down any guidelines for the fee to be charged from the student during the duration of the course . However on an average the fee charges is around Rs.10,000/- per year.
What is the admission procedure for the BMS program? The BMS 2004 Admission process is likely to be centralized. The University of Mumbai is currently finalizing the total number of seats per college, percentage break up of seats per college.
The procedure for admission is likely to as follows:
* Declaration of the CCEE results on 17th June 2004 * University will mail the CCEE Score Card to all the students by 20th June 2004 * University to conduct a centralized counseling and allocate admission seat in colleges as per CCEE Score and Rank * Payment of fees once admission is secured
Counseling Counseling would be done in-group. For example top 300 ranks would be asked to report on a particular day. The schedule has not yet been announced. The students would also receive a letter detailing this counseling process along with their SCORE CARD. The counseling process will be as follows
* The first lot of students would be offered a list of colleges. * The students would have to select their college. * Upon selection of the college, they have to fill in an admission form * This form would be sent to THAT college only * Student would have to go to THAT college and complete the admission formalities * The student has to submit SSC, HSC, SCORE CARD and the fee as a part of the admission process
What is the CCEE? CCEE stands for Centralized Common Entrance Examination. The CCEE is a prerequisite for admission into the BMS Program of the University of Mumbai.
The CCEE is of 75 minutes duration and consist of 100 questions in the area of Math, English, Logical Reasoning and Visual Reasoning.
The subject wise break-up of questions in previous year's CCEE was: Subject Areas Number of questions in the CCEE Structure CCEE 99 CCEE 00 CCEE 01 CCEE 02 CCEE 03 Elementary Mathematics 40 31 30 36 31 Test Duration: 75 minutes Verbal Ability 30 31 30 35 36 Logical Reasoning 20 28 30 19 23 Number of Questions: 100 Visual Reasoning 10 10 10 10 10
What is the Cut off for the CCEE? There is no specific cut -off for the CCEE. However to get admission in one of the top ranked colleges and a college of one's choice it necessary a student score around 75+.
What is the level of competition in the CCEE? The competition for admission in one of top 10 colleges is high. Out of the 65 colleges offering the BMS Program, there are only about 10 top colleges. For admission in one of these top colleges, a score of around 75+ and a CCEE rank within the top 300 is required. The total number of students taking the CCEE is around 9000 students.
What is the eligibility criterion for CCEE?
As per the guidelines laid down by the University of Mumbai - students who have passed the HSC exams can take the CCEE provided:
* Secured minimum 45% marks at the HSC examinations or its equivalent for the General Category (at first attempt) and minimum 40% marks for the Reserved Category (at first attempt)
And
* On the basis of Score secured at the CCEE
A student who is taking the HSC exams in the current year the CCEE is held is also eligible to apply.
Besides the above Minority institutions have their own basis of objectively deciding the merit of students and may use in addition to the CCEE score.
* Marks obtained in Xth and /or XIIth examinations * Separate entrance examination, Discussions, and personal interviews * Separate entrance examination
Any other basis decided by the management of that institution, including a combination of the above.
Should I wait for one year after my HSC for BMS if I miss the CCEE? That is for the students to decide. However ideally students who missed their CCEE exams in one year should not wait to give it the succeeding year. They should enroll for a normal BA/B.Sc./B.Com degree. If the student is not happy with the course then he/she can give the CCEE the next year. But he must be prepared to justify his /her gap and also be prepared to lose one year.
How many colleges offer the BMS program? The total number of colleges offering the BMS program is 65. Some of these colleges are in the Open Category while others are in the Minority Category. The Minority community colleges may have different entrance format for students belonging to that community. For e.g. HR college conducts a separate entrance test for students seeking admission to the college under the Sindhi minority category
For a complete list of college, please click here
What are the number of seats in each college? Each college has 60 seats. However the Minority Category College has 50% i.e. 30 seats reserved for the minority community. Besides this , seats are also reserved for the Reserved Community as per Govt. of India regulations.
Which are the best colleges?
? HR College (Churchgate) ? Narsee Monjee College (Ville Parle) ? Jai Hind College (Churchgate) ? Sydenham College (Churchgate) ? St.Xaviers College (Metro)
? SIES Sion4 Mithibai College (Santacruz) ? Vivekanand College (Chembur) ? SIES Nerul ? Mulund College of Commerce
Is there any University quota similar to CET (for MBA)? There is no fixed quota for Maharashtra Board students or Mumbai/ Maharashtra domicile students .
Students from any recognized Board in India can join the BMS program. However, students from outside Maharashtra Board have to get an Eligibility Certificate (ET) from the Mumbai University along with a the Migration Certificate from the School Board from where he/she completed the HSC.
Will my marks in the HSC have any weightage? Your marks in the HSC carry no weightage for the BMS entrance. You only have to score a minimum of 45% at your Boards.
You have to remember that at the time of filling up the Application Form (which is around April) , the HSC results are not known , However, the SSC (class X) marks are important as this mark may be used in breaking a tie , incase two or more students have the same CCEE score
What are my job options after BMS? A BMS graduate is on par if not on a higher level than a normal BA / B.Sc / B.Com graduate, in terms of opportunities in Private Sector Job Market. Many companies have of late started preferring fresh graduates with undergraduate business management degrees like BMS/BBA/BBS, etc.
Students from the BMS batch of 2003 from some of the good colleges have been able to attract top-notch jobs from blue chip companies. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that the BMS Program offers a great deal of value - addition to a student in term of skill enhancement rather than knowledge enhancement prevalent in a normal graduation programs.
The better-ranked BMS Colleges also arrange for in Campus Placement for its students. Therefore the job scenario automatically increases if the student is pursuing the BMS Program in one of the top colleges. It is difficulty to quote any figures about the placement scenario of BMS College, in the absence of any reliable reports. However most of the top 5 BMS colleges in Mumbai have reported excellent placements. The top colleges attracts the best students and hence attracts the best companies for placements.
After BMS what?
A BMS graduate after graduating has the following options before him/ her:
* Further Studies in the Post Graduate Level o Management oriented (MBA/MMS) o Non-Management Oriented (CA/ CS/ Law, etc) * Take up a job in the Private Sector o Sales & Marketing o Finance * Take up a job in the Public Sector o Join Govt. of India Service by taking UPSC or other State Services Board examination o Jobs in PSU banks o Govt. of India companies * Further Studies Abroad
