Hello,
These days internet is providing us many good advantages of which learning has become very familiar.Learning course can be of many types like course in signing, music, education etc.
Learning effectively through them all relies on you.It depends on you capability as per how much you can learn from there.I am not an expert in this but there are few basic guidelines which you should follow in order to get maximum output.
Certain basic tips are
1.Always choose the best site for which ever course you are planing to learn.
2.Once you get the site start your preparation by listening to the class with utmost attention.
3.Maintain a notebook in order to take note of all the points that are important.
4.Taking done notes is an important aspect among all because things that are written can be memorized easily.
5.Concepts that you think are most important and that you cannot understand use the net for getting more information regarding it.
6.Once you start your research on it try to get maximum information that you feel is enough.
7.When you follow these steps you would be in a stage where you have a lot of conceptual idea about the topic.
8.Prepare in such a way that you would be able to answer any question from that topic.
9.The last and the main step is to implement all that you have learnt practically so that it stays in your head forever.

Greetings,
Being a online student myself ( not an expert though ) I can tell few points,

First and foremost check the authenticity of whatever you are selecting online, check for any hidden charge or condition, always have a crosscheck either from previous learner or universities claimed in the advertisements.
It will be good to choose from the courses offering personnel guidance or problem/ doubt solving sessions, also they must have a monthly meet or class for guidance.
It should be providing a certification of course completed, also you must appear in all tests they conduct.
Online courses lack the inspection on our self, please be focused and treat it as serious as u may in classroom.
Whatever You are studying should be practiced so to be of later use.
Do not bound yourself to just the course material try to get previous learner's notes and guidance, also go for little extra if you can.
Always test yourself with unsolved papers and online discussions.

Have faith in whatever you have decided. Even if it takes ample amount of time to decide no problem but once decided never step back.
Its purely your way of study, making notes, selection of books, that fetch you good marks.
Just suit yourself.
Best of luck

I have done many MOOC courses. In fact I am a registered student of Futurelearn. Not only this site (Futurelearn), there are various other sites which conduct MOOC and online courses. Examinations are also held every week. Basically I completed these courses to satisfy my thirst of knowledge in various specialized fields and to know about references on these subjects/issues. The students can chose these online courses as par their inclinations or their areas of specialization. These courses do wonder for improving self-confidence and provide updated information in students' areas of study. These courses also enrich the Resume' but it is not possible to apply for jobs solely on the basis of these courses.
