Guinness World Records do not pay any money to those who break or set records. However, they do award an official certificate of the achievement free of charge. The certificate includes for what purpose they obtain the awards and in which year.

As it has been made clear from the above expert responses, the person who gets a record in his/her name may get monetary benefits from third parties or media and even the monetary appreciation from government for making or breaking a record. But the same is never guaranteed. Once you set a record, it is likely that you get well recognition and a celebrity status which opens new doors to be rich for several record holders, but no money from the Guinness World prize.
As far as the validity of the fact that 'Guinness World Record holders do not get paid' is concerned, you can please refer to the provided link to their official FAQ section.

Most of the guineas book records are often funded by sponsors. For example some of the records such as tomato sauce related competition sponsored by Heinz. So such sponsors end up arranging the event and giving prizes. But the record keeper doesn't give the prize money etc. Most of the TV shows and the events are sponsored so that's how the prize and the financials are handled. Some of the records dont get any form of financial compensation where there are no sponsors.
