If you look at the history of women, you will understand that they have always been suppressed by the men in power, by religion, by politics, by arts. No religion has ever treated women as equal with men. Because in this entire universe, creation is feminine. All that is creative is feminine. To bring a new life, a womb is required. It does not matter how many men are there.
Lets say there 99 women and 1 man, we have chances for 99 pregnancy. Where as 99 men and 1 woman, we have only one chance for pregnancy.
Since the world has become competitive in every sphere, we cannot discount the competition among religions as well. It has become a number game. It is pride to say half the world is Christianity or Islam or Hindu or Jainas.
Whoever outproduces than other religion wins the game. Thats why men are allowed to polygamy and not women.
If you look at several tribal communities of Africa and India, there are polygamous men and women. And it is not a question of right but a way of living.
Every country supports polygamy and it is just not made public. Tell me a place on earth where polygamy does not exist? It is just law of most countries but the exceptions, by passes exists throughout
Hope this answers your query

Islam is a religion based on practicality. It has been proved scientifically that women are less prone to fatal disease than men. During olden days, due to continuous war, mortality rate of men was far more than women. Therefore lesser men will be available for women to marry. Women polygamy will further enhance the gravity of issue, where it will be difficult for each women to get suitable male counterpart to marry. Further by having more than one husband, it would be difficult to decide the exact father of the child. Whereas vice versa will not create any such issue. Therefore in Islam women polygamy is prohibited.
