What are the rights of a person residing on another's property for long duration?

I heard that a person residing on another's land by paying rent for a long period and with the address proof of staying in that place (ex: ration card) has the right of staying there for as long as their wish against the interest of land owner and later can claim that land belongs to them by showing that they reside there for long period. Is it true ? What rights do they have?
