To be honest, the best places to settle down in India may not be the most affordable ones. Metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, etc. are pretty good. Even amongst these three, Mumbai and Bengaluru have more job opportunities, but, Pune may give you more cheap accommodation facilities on sharing basis. However, it is better to go with Mumbai or Bengaluru, where you will have job opportunities galore to build your career.
Mumbai has a better public transport than Bengaluru, so, you can easily stay at the low-priced areas in Mumbai and find job at the heart of the city, and travel regularly. Actually, transportation wise, Delhi would have been best, but, it is a very violent and unsafe city. So, you will be better off at Mumbai or Bengaluru. You would face traffic and pollution problems in both cities, however, weather of Bengaluru is excellent throughout the year. In Mumbai, you will have to face humidity during summer, and heavy rainfall during monsoon. The winters are very pleasant in Mumbai.
Overall, I would guess you need to be sure what kind of jobs you are looking for. Also, you need to find the options for part-time courses or certification courses that you can give, while doing your job. The city that offers more alternatives, should be selected by you regardless of all other parameters. Since you are a bachelor, you can compromise on other aspects, but, not on your career.

Pune is one of the expensive in terms of living. You have higher cost for rent and food. In case of bangalore, you have little lower rate. In case of Mumbai, the amount goes lot higher than other two.
I think the best place for singles these days would be Chennai, Chandigarh, Dehradun and Mangalore. Also the goa is also slowly developing. So if you take all the kind of jobs and the focus on things then you know there are many places to go.
It just requires your focus and the zeal to work hard. This way you can start from non metro city and then go ahead to settle in metro cities.

Generally educated, young people of India prefer Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad for starting their professional career. But these places are no longer affordable. I prefer the following cities for starting new career and also from the point of view of affordability:-
(a) Pune: This is an industrial and IT hub and the city is more affordable than Mumbai or other metro cities of the country. Moreover, the weather is pleasant and there is no dearth good academic institutions in this historical city.
(b) Indore: This is the industrial hub and commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh. This place offers excellent opportunity for the young professionals and is extremely affordable.
(c) Soan (Himachal Pradesh): Yes, this place is well-known for food processing industries. The Himachal Pradesh Government is developing Solan industrially. The place is extremely affordable and provides employment opportunities in various sectors. The weather is also very pleasant.

You can reverse your plan. I mean, first search for a good job and once get a job, shift to that city. Every place has its own negative ans positive points and every place has accommodation facilities for all economic ranges.
Secondly, every person has his own Cheap to reasonable to expensive measurement scale. One thing can be cheap for you but can be costly for another at same cost.
And your priority should a good job, accommodation can be adjusted for some initial days of career.
