What are the benefits of eating cardamom ( elaichi ) ?

Cardamom ( elaichi ) is added as an ingredient in many Indian dishes. What are the benefits of eating cardamom ? Is it added for the purpose of flavor only or there is some nutrition value also in cardamom ? Also what are the differences and similarities in green cardamom and black cardamom?

Cardamom is to be used in very less quantities in food preparation as a flavouring agent. It is not a food by itself. In food it is used as spic.

However it has many benefits for our body. It is used in various Ayurvedic medicines as main or one ingredient. Direct use of cardamom seeds is done for chewing in the mouth to remove bad odour and also along with betel and nuts.
Cardamom is good for digestion. It is an ingredient in many digestive medicines and carminatives in Ayurveda system. It also is used as essence or essential oil as a flavouring agent in many digestive and carminative medicines in Allopathic medicines also.

Cardomom is useful in cold and cough and chest congestion. Hence it is present as major ingredient in many cough and cold remedies.

But excessive use of cardamom can cause 'inner body heat'. Hence it is to be used in small quantities in masalas, or as flavouring agent in Pulav, Biriyani etc. or when chewed directly. For chewing for removing bad odour in mouth, just a few grains should be taken.
Cardamom should be used less in summer and can be slightly enhanced in winter.The skin and grans can be used during boiling water for tea, especially in winter.

It is used in most of the deserts and the non veg dishes. You may find that it offers a lot of benefits in the dishes. It changes the smell and the taste of the food. It can be used as a topping for most of the ice cream or dairy based deserts too.

It helps in hiccups and most of the home remedies for acidity and hiccups have it in it's mixture.

It helps in Detoxification of the stomach and it is often used in the food such as biryani and curry to reduce the extreme taste.

Some home remedies for depression include it in medicine. It helps in fighting depression by affecting the nerves that affect the mood.

Dry cough can be reduced by intake of honey and cadamom. Most of the ayurvedic doctors recommend this as well.
