I am 25 years old and am facing a problem. I love a person of Christian religion and want to get married to him. I need to know the legal formalities for this to happen. Can we get married at a temple since I am a Hindu and my fiance is a Christian?

In such cases the Special Marriage Act, 1954 applies. Individuals of all faiths i.e. Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis, or Jews can perform marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Intercaste marriages can also be performed under this Act. In case of marriages performed under said Act, there is no need of any rites or ceremonial to be performed and the marriage can be solemnized at the specified Marriage Office. However the bridegroom must be at least 21 years old and the bride must be at least 18 years old.

If both of you are adults having the minimum age of Brides and Bride - groom are 18 and 21 respectively and both of you have likeness for each other, you can approach the office of Marriage - registrar for the final consent of the office. You couple would not have to go either church or temples for the solemnisation of the marriage.
However, you couple may arrange a party where respected and well known persons would be invited in the party to witness the celebration of the marriage.
But what is more important is that you should have stable income to support you fiancé financially and in the years ahead, you have to take up the responsibility of your children for their well being including Education and their Medical - bills. So, financial - consideration is most important and apart from it both of you have mutual trust and a fair degree of tolerance so as to sort out the issues amicably.

There is only one legal formality for any kind of marriage whether it's inter caste or within same caste. You need to register your marriage that's it. You can do marriage in temple if the priest allows that's religious issue and the best way is to do court marriage. Nothing much is required, just the presence of bride and groom and 2 witnesses from each side is sufficient.
