It was the tradition started from the European premier league where the orphan kids were accompanying with the players. That trend was started due to large number of orphan kids were in need of financial aid. And the matches were played.
Often even to date the matches were played for the benefit of the orphans and other needy people. This trend also shifted to players bringing their own kids or niece or nephews on the ground.
This trend was picked by other sports like cricket, tennis, olympics and few other sports. And now the kids are from NGO and other orphanage etc. And they get some financial aide from the profit of the matches played. In case cricket, the board decided which kids are to be brought into the playground. Mostly the relatives are brought in case if the kids from the NGO don't appear.

There is no specific significance of children accompanying cricket players at the time of National Anthem. However, this tradition(?) has been borrowed from European Premier Football League.
Not only cricket, this practice has been noticed by me in Hockey also. To me, this is nothing but a photo-opp.

The tradition of children accompanying the players seems to be commenced with the football matches. The custom was not followed in cricket until recent times. Though I am not sure exactly when, but the tradition seems to stating with the advent of the T20 cricket.
There does not seem to be any specific reasons for the practice. In the earlier days of this practice, the orphan children were picked to accompany the players with an aim of providing them a little finance in the bargain. However, it appears to have changed now. The children are now selected through some sort of promotional events at the schools around the venue.
Some views associate the practice with the advertisement money earned through the live telecast program. The pitch inspection, walk-ins, shake hands and the toss let the TV channels to air more programming and more airtime. Using children adds an extra element of financial planning.
