NIT s are a group of engineering colleges in India. Just IITs ( Indian Institute of Technology), NIT stands for National Institute of Technology. Previously, they were labelled as RECs - Regional Engineering Colleges. The NITs were governed by the corresponding state governments. The institutes were declared as the Institutes of National Importance by a Parliament act in 2007. The institutes are now autonomous and impart Bachelor, masters and Ph.D level of education in varied branches of Engineering and technology.
