There are real pearls and there are fakes. Usually high end jewelries contain what we call Cultured pearls.

Natural pearls are quite rare and there will always be a scarcity to get them in enough quantity. That is the reason why these pearls are cultured. A Natural pearls is developed when a parasite, or impurity enters into the Oyster. The Oyster constructs a sac around the parasite and then goes on building Nacre around it.
The farmed pearls are obtained by breeding the Oysters and managing the whole process of pearl manufacturing. There are many pearl farms around the world.

There is another method named Cultured Pearls. These pearls are made through the Oysters themselves, but the parasite or the impurity is introduced manually. The cultured pearls are more affordable than the naturally harvested ones.

Finally, there are man made pearls that are manufactured in labs. The process uses the same material used by the Oyster to make pearls. These pearls are manufactured by artificial means.

Hyderabad is a famous centre in India for the production of pearls. An entire village of Chandanpet is involved in the manufacture of pearls.

Original pearls are not man-made, they are naturally produced in the seas and ocean inside mollusc shells. Molluscs are water living creatures and there are different types of molluscs found in the sea water and ocean. Pearl producing molluscs are a kind of molluscs thus all molluscs don't produce pearls. They produce pearls in their cover like shell. Pearls are extracted from the shells.

There are two types of pearls in the market.

1. Natural pearls
2. Synthetic pearls or artificial pearls

Natural pearls are not made but are created by nature. Be it under water or nearby the mountain with lava has such mines. In those mines you'd find pearls of various types. The underwater pearls take more years and conditioning for the making. In case of the pearls in mines, you'd find that they require polishing and other fine tweaking before being sold into the market.

Artificial pearls are usually made in the factory. They can be also part of the chemical and plastic process waste. And being sold due to the demand in the market. Often the residue of the chemical and plastic factories make such pearl like products. So they are being sold in the market.

There are factories in the delhi, hyderabad and kota for such artificial pearls.
