It is the scientific study of gemstones. In gemology we study about mineralogical fundamentals such as formation, genesis, formalities, physical properties and
identification of gemstones. Diamonds and Diamond Grading, Coloured Gemstone Identification, Diploma in Gemology, Masters Diploma in Gem Identification , Gem Identification Certificate course, Certificate course in Cut Design and Analysis, Pearl Grading, Polished Diamond Grading course are some gemology courses. Indian Institute of Gemology Karol Bagh, Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ) Mumbai, Sinhgad School of Gemmology and Jewellery Designing Pune, Indian Institute of Jewellery (IIJ) Mumbai, International Institute of Gemological Sciences New Delhi, Solitaire Diamond Institute Bangalore, PD Institute of Gem Stone Manufacturing and Management Jaipur are some gemology colleges.

Gemology is the science of studying gemstones. It covers both natural and artificial gemstones. It is considered as both anthropological and mineralogy science. Gemology basically undertakes the study of formations, genesis, localities, physical properties and identification of gemstones.

Gemmology is a branch of science where detailed study of Gems are carried out including its practical aspects such as refractive index, other optical properties, its purity and other related properties of Gems.
To get admission in Certificate Course in Gemology or in Dilploma courses an aspirant must have passed 10+2 and must be proficient in local languages so that he can converse effectively to promote the sales of Gems. The duration of the course varies from nine weeks to a year depending upon selection of the course.
