Extinguishing forest fire is really tedious, difficult and high risk job. There are airplanes that carry tons of sand and drop them from air over the fire zone. That is the safest way. At times, forest department sends experts team with fire engine and mud sprinklers which is lethal at times as it involves life risk.

Forest fires are not as simple as normal fires because the fire is caused due to extreme dryness resulting in heat waves. Once the fire is ignited may be say one tree rubbing over the other then the heat waves in the surrounding favors for faster blazing. It is not so common in India and definitely a rare phenomena.

When the forest fire is spreading along ground only burning the ground grass and small plants, then it is relatively easy to control. However, when the fire engulfs big trees and spreads burning trees nearby an if there is a wind fanning the fire, it is difficult to control.

Usually forest fires are prevented from spreading, by having fire lines at periodical distances near the periphery of the forests. Areas of some width like roads will be made by removing dry trees and burning under controlled supervision all plants and ground grass along a sort of ring road . Depending on the nature of the forest, the area and the risk factors, more such fire lines are made. Forest officials engage the local people and tribesmen living inside the forest area or in the periphery areas. They are trained in fire fighting, control ,watch and alert matters.
They are also engaged in creating fire lines

Relatively smaller fires spreading along the ground grass and small plants can be easily controlled by beating with green bushes and throwing mud and soil and water spray.
However if the fire spreads fast and engulfs tall trees and flames reach high, then only aerial spraying of chemicals and water are resorted.

There are times when the fires will be so huge that it may take days before controlling it. These are mostly seen in other countries.

The only possible is to involves local people by trained them and the conciousness of forest department can prevent the occurence of such event.

Beside that if government or local authorities enganged some special force then it's too helps in detecting the problem.

The actual firefighting when it comes to fighting the wildfire depends on upon the various factors. However, the basic principle is to cut off the connection between the fire and its fuel. Here are a few ways to fight the fire -

Fire breakers
Firefighters cordon off the area around the fire by creating a ring around it. The fire will not move beyond the ring and thus can be controlled.

Fire out techniques
This is what confused me the other day while watching it on TV on account of wildfire in Uttarakhand. The firefighters choose a barrier like a plain field or a road. Then they burn out all the fuel between the barrier and the fire. Thus, when the fire reaches the spot, there is no fuel and fire dies out.

Air planes
Special aircrafts carry air tankers over the area and dump water, foam and other fire retardants over the fire. One of the prominent agents that retard fire is ammonium phosphate. Developed countries employ computer controlled pilot-less aircrafts for the purpose.

High end technology
Technology has been playing an immensely important role in controlling wildfire of late. A huge group of the system including computers, satellite and other digital equipments are used in tandem with each other. They provide the information needed in the form of directions and maps.

There are various ways to forest fires but one of the most recent and new advent in the technology, which is used to stop these fire is a device which looks like inverted umbrella carries tons of water from nearby ponds and rivers and throws it on fire effected areas.
Also the efforts of local people to cope up with forest fires by using their conventional as well as helping firefighter by cooprating with them.

There are ways to stop the fire in forest or nearby forest areas. But depending on the affected areas and the available resources plans are made. So most likely the forest fire are stopped with many ways such as sand dropping, water pump spraying. Most of the time water and sand works. As it stops the fire from spreading. Also some of the time wind is used by helicopter and airplane to reduce the capacity of fire to spread. So it all depends on the region where there is a fire. And the measures are done on case by case basis.
