There are 2 types of officers related to banks.
1) Trainee Officer (TO)
If you join as a clerk in a bank, you should do certain period of service (generally 4 years) to be eligible to write some tests. If you qualify in these tests, you will become a Trainee Officer (TO).
2) Probationary Officer (PO)
If you have a degree, you are eligible to write PO test (the one you mentioned above). If you qualify this test, you will become a Probationary Officer (PO).
So, a PO is directly appointed as a Scale 1 officer in a bank whereas a TO is appointed as a Scale 1 officer only after serving as a clerk. Hope you got what you need.

State Bank of India releases its recruitment notification for the recruitment of Probationary Officers (PO's). Probationary Officer is the name of the post and basically they are officers which are under Probationary for 2 years. Till the period of 2 years from the joining in State Bank of India, they are treated as PO's. While soon after completion of probationary period, they will be placed in the next higher grades.
* The Probationary Officer will be on a probation of 2 years which they will be given intensive training.
* Towards the end of the Probation or Training period, they will be subjected to a screening process.
* Those officers who achieve the predetermined standards may be confirmed and given placement in the next higher grade.

Others who qualify in the test but do not meet the required standards, they will be confirmed as "Officer Junior Management Grade Scale-I".
