What it means by the probationary officer of a bank?

Date: 04 May 2016    Group: Career Guidance    Category: Finance and Banking Jobs

Recently, I have seen an advertisement published by the State Bank of India regarding appointment to the post of probationary officer. What it means by the probationary officer of a bank? Is it the name of the post or the selected candidates are appointed to the post of Assistant manager or Deputy manager etc.?

Puzzled about the meaning of a probationary officer in a bank position? Understand from experts what the words probationary officer means.

There are 2 types of officers related to banks.
1) Trainee Officer (TO)
If you join as a clerk in a bank, you should do certain period of service (generally 4 years) to be eligible to write some tests. If you qualify in these tests, you will become a Trainee Officer (TO).
2) Probationary Officer (PO)
If you have a degree, you are eligible to write PO test (the one you mentioned above). If you qualify this test, you will become a Probationary Officer (PO).
So, a PO is directly appointed as a Scale 1 officer in a bank whereas a TO is appointed as a Scale 1 officer only after serving as a clerk. Hope you got what you need.
