It depends on many factors like the duration of the diploma course the author is pursuing at present and whether that is being done from a Government recognised or reputed private institution or not. There are many private institution which offer course like diploma in animation for which 10th pass in the minimum eligibility criteria. Otherwise generally 10+2 pass or equivalent qualification is required for pursuing diploma in animation courses. However, private institution may admit a student with a diploma treating the same as equivalent to 10+2 course. It also depends on the location where the author intend to pursue the course. In metro like Delhi, Mumbai etc. and other major cities, many institutes are available which offer the diploma in animation courses and can searched in ISC resources or on the net .

If you are good at sketching and creative designing or imagination, then getting into the animation or art is a good option. The reason being you can use the skills to the best of your abilities.
Diploma can be a good option to have on the side. But if you are serious with animation, then you can proceed with the current plan.
Make sure you get placed frm the animation institutes course. Most of the time if you get placed, you're going to get a better salary and career benefits are a lot compared to regular diploma.
