What are Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER)?

I have seen news published in news papers about Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER)? What are IISER? Where are they located and what types and levels of education they offer? What is the admission process and eligibility criteria for admission in IISER?

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) are group of science education and research institutes created by the Government of India.

Number of IISER's and Their Location:
There are seven IISER's which were established across the country. They are
IISER Kolkata in West Bengal
IISER Pune in Maharashtra
IISER Mohali in Punjab
IISER Bhopal in Madya Pradesh
IISER Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala
IISER Tirupathi in Andhra Pradesh
IISER Berhampur in Odisha

Courses Offered:
IISER's offers following courses
BS-MS Dual Degree course
Ph.D Degee
Integrated Ph.D program

Eligibility Criteria:
There are 3 channels of admission, they are
1. KVPY Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana
Candidates with valid KVPY fellowship are eligible.

2. IIT - JEE Joint Entrance Examination of Indian Institutes of Technology
Candidates who have secured a rank within 10000 in the JEE Advanced 2016 are eligible.

3. SCB State and Central Boards
Candidates who have passed 10+2 level (science stream) in 2015 or 2016 with marks above or equal to the cut off percentage (given below) in their respective boards are eligible to apply. For the candidates belonging to the OBCNC and PD categories, there is a relaxation of 5 %. The cut-off percentage for the SC, ST and KM candidates is 55% in 10+2 level for all boards. Students applying through SCB have to appear in the IISER Aptitude Test.
