You may click on the volume icon on the task bar at bottom right .
There you may first click on 'troubleshoot on sound problems' and follow the leads thrown by the trouble shooter. The problem may get resolved.
If not, then next click on 'playback devices'. see if you have the right device checked(ticked). Speakers are default devices. Click to see and verify properties and tick the right figure of bitrate. You may also do a little trial and error(noting what was there earlier to change back to default if it does not work) if you do not know the speaker configuration.
If that all don't work and you doubt the driver issue, then go to device manager from start menu search --- sound and audio devices --verify is driver is update. If not go for updating drivers selecting suitable option.

The lack of sound means that your laptop is under two conditions-
1. Driver not installed
2. Driver is corrupted.
If your laptop has some sound of any type then it could be not the issue of not lack of driver. However some of the time you may need to reinstall the existing driver to get back the sound.
If your driver is corrupted due to some reason then you have to uninstall the existing driver in order to reinstall the same driver. You can also check if you can update the driver if available. I suggest you to reinstall the sound driver of your laptop. This solves the issue most of the time.

Your problem may be due to the following reasons.
By software failure, I mean the problem is related to sound drivers in your computer. If there is any problem during the installation of drivers, they many not work properly and thereby cause problems like this. So, the first thing you should do is uninstall your sound drivers and install them again properly and then check the sound. If the problem persists, it may be a fault in the driver i.e. the driver itself has some fault. So, download some other sound drivers from the internet and install them in your computer and check the sound again. If the problem persists, you can be sure that it is not a software failure.
The problem may be in the hardware related to sound in your computer i.e. there may be a fault in the speakers etc,. In such case, you should consult a technician and check whether it is a hardware fault or not. Then, the problem can be solved.
Hope this answer helps.
