How to clean and maintain artificial flowers?

Date: 30 May 2016   Posted By: Vandana     Group: Home    Category: Cleaning Queries

We have a garland of artificial flowers that we use for God's idol/photo along with real flowers. The garland is not the brown sandalwood type, but a coloured one with leaves & flowers purchased on a trip some months back from South India. We also have a few artificial flowers in a vase for decoration purposes.
I would like to know the best tips to wash such flowers without breaking them or damaging them or losing their colour and how to maintain them effectively so that they last for the long term.
Awaiting advice.

Dust it then

make a solution of mild shampoo and water dip a soft cloth in it and wipe the flowers.

then wipe it with dry cloth.

using shampoo is better than using harsh detergents.

Cleaning method depends on the material of the artificial flower. If the material is water proof one, you can safely wash it with just dipping in water and hanging it for drying. If it is too dirty, you can use water-soap solution and after dipping t for a few minutes as per the dirt, clean it with water. Do not rinse. To avoid possible colour fading, do not dry under direct hot sunlight, but dry in shade in a place where there is no dust flow.
You can use small pressure sprayers.
If the material is not water proof, say, special paper and similar materials, use air blowing- depending on the thickness it can be mild to moderate blow. Very soft brushes with soft nylon bristles also can be used. The hand pressed balloon type air blower used for cleaning computers also can be used.

Artificial flowers can be cleaned with the washing powder liquid. This can be used in the solution that has some water. So adding that water on the flowers and then cleaning it up with the cloth would definitely help. I'd say you should wash it on regular basis to avoid the flower from getting more dust.

You can also use the collin liquid that people often use for cleaning TV and other plastic material. Collin is light on the surface of any plastic material. It just gets the dust cleaned. You need to use cloth in this case too.

Another option is to those spray that are anti dust and take few weeks to wear off the effect. There are also some brooms that clean the dust from such flowers. So these can be some of the good options for you.

First thing is to clean the dust on the flowers with feather duster, though it will not remove the stains and heavy dust but you can use it initially. Compressed air cans are available in market.

Use them to clean the stains and heavy dust from the artificial flowers. Apart from this you can also use silk flower cleaning spray. It will not harm the glue of the artificial flowers and it will not damage the color of glue of the flowers. Just spray it on flowers and don't need to wipe it. Though the sprays are very expensive, they give very good results on your artificial flowers.

If you want some cheaper remedy then you can try to put the flowers in plastic bag with some salt in it. Shake the bag for few seconds and you can see the salt has removed the dust from the flowers. Be gently while shaking the bag as it can damage the flowers.
