    Food is what sustains us, obviously. Food supplements are meant to help the body absorb nutrients which may not be got through diets and meal plans. For example, a person who is allergic to certain foods like milk will not be able to consume any product made out of milk. So, he or she has to rely on certain food supplements.

    There are certain diseases like diabetes which prevents us from eating any food of choice, so such patients are given food supplements so that their health is not affected.

    Food supplements which are recommended by doctors can be used but please do not rely on advertisements alone because the so called magical potions and food supplements which are advertised through the television do more harm than good.

    It is better to consult a nutritionist for such advice than ask the doctor.

    Like air,water Food is a necessary requriment for the survival of any kind of living form present on this earth.
    Whereas food supplements are taken to fulfil the nutrient required by body and specially used by those individuals who are lacking in any such kind of vitamins and nutrients.
    In some cases these are also taken by those who becuase of some reasons skip meals and are not able to take proper diet to fulfil mineral and nutrienr requirements.

    One has to take balanced food i.e. containing all essential components like proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals etc. Generally it is not possible to take balanced food always as a routine which sometimes results in deficiency of one essential ingredient or the other. Food supplements are taken to compensate for the missing components. During the age of adolescence, comparatively more protein is required for sustaining growth which is taken in the form of a food supplement. It is not healthy to take only food supplements. Fiber or roughage is also required which is available in food items, though nowadays roughage is also taken by few people as a food supplement. In case of astronauts, food is specially prepared for them which contains all essential ingredients though in a very small quantity to control the requirement of excretion.

    Food supplements are source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, botanicals and other nutrient substances in measured dosage form. Food supplement are beneficial for general health and in the management of health conditions. Their main purpose is supplementing normal or poor diet or correcting a nutritional deficiency.
    Complete balance healthy diet cannot be replaced by food supplements. A diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, protein, starch and fats provide much more than what a food supplement can. However in today's fast paced life as we neglect the importance of healthy balance diet, the need for food supplement has arisen. Our body requires nutrients in desired quantity to carry out our bodily function, excessive intake of vitamins and minerals may be harmful and cause side effects. Hence one should take caution while taking food supplement and not replace it with healthy diet. It is always good to take supplement under doctor's guidance as nutritional requirement varies from person to person and a doctor can best decide the dosage more appropriate for oneself. Food supplement are not drugs, they contain nutrients that work with our body biology for maintaining and supporting enzyme function and biochemical reactions. And hence they should not be even replaced with medicines.
    Now-a-days food supplements are available in various dosage forms as pills, tablets, capsules, powders, liquids, energy bars etc. Always check the supplement fact list of contents, ingredient amount per serving, added fillers, binders before starting supplements.
