Is FIR required to be lodged when an important document is lost?

Generally for obtaining duplicate copy of any important or valuable document, the people are asked to submit a copy of police report. In day to day language, it is said that a FIR is required to be lodged. Do the police stations actually register a FIR on reporting loss of an important document?

FIR is required if your any important document has been lost. Because anybody can misuse of the documents and also when you want to take a duplicate copy from the regional office then that regional office also demand for a FIR copy of that documents. FIR is only for security purpose and no misuse of that documents.

Most of the documents require FIR in order to get the duplicate from the issuing department. Some of such documents are aadhar card, driving license, passport etc etc. Most of such documents are highly personal in nature. So it is required for you to have the FIR before you ask for the duplicate or reissuing of those documents. Driving license and passport are the most common documents that require FIR before reissuing the documents.

Yes, First Information Report (FIR) is mot definitely required if a document is lost. This is to prevent any other person to misuse such documents. As for example, the driving license, ration card, identity card, AADHAR card, etc. can be easily misused by the criminals. The FIR is also required to enable the concerned authorities to issue a duplicate in lieu of the missing document.

First Information Report is important to register in case of the document is lost to the nearest police station. Documents such as Educational certificates, Government issued documents such as Ration Card, aadhar card, DL( Driving Licence), PAN Card, Passport.
Usually the Police officers find the lost document within a week based on the information provided and on the lost situation. Sometimes it takes time for them to analyse the situation and get them back.A FIR copy is used and must produce a copy to obtain a duplicate copy of the documents with the concerned departments.

Yes, we have to lodge a complaint with the station House Officer at the nearest police station regarding the loss of item so that we can claim for the insurance for the lost item, in case it is not traceable by the police. FIR (First Information Report) is mandatory regarding lodge of complaint even in the cases of lost Identity cards,Passport, Aadhar, Voter ID, Ration card, original certificates of the qualifying examination and other important documents to enable the individuals to apply for duplicate copies of the same. Based on the FIR, the SHO would issue a certificate stating that the loss of the item was reported and investigated with the outcome of such investigations.

So, it is always ideal to obtain a letter from the nearest police station regarding the loss of the document and registration of the complaint.

The filing of an FIR is actually a precaution. Certain documents could be misused by miscreants and criminal minded people. However the original owner may need a duplicate of the same for his purpose and normal necessary transactions and business. In such situations filing of FIR helps in two ways:
1. It gives the duplicate issuing authority a certainty that the original is actually lost and the same is reported duly.
2. In case the lost document is misused and some damage happened, then FIR helps to take further action and proceed to take action on the person who misused it.

In addition to this, in case the document is insured, or forms part of a comprehensive insurance and eligible for compensation, then also filing of an FIR is needed.
The practical aspect is that the police dept is so over burdened that initially it may need much convincing and persistence on them to take up an FIR in these relatively insignificant cases to them.

For some important documents you need FIR copy. My cousin had lost her wallet and in that all the important documents where there. When she wanted to do the duplicate copy of that they were asking for FIR copy. Especially when she wanted to do the PAN Card duplicate. They told her to get the copy of FIR. She had to file a FIR in the near by station where she had lost. So for certain important documents you need to file a FIR.
