Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a disorder of digestive system. Between esophagus and stomach, there is a muscle in the shape of ring. This is known as lower esophageal sphincter (LES). In GERD, this ring muscle gets affected. When contents of stomach flows back upwards in esophagus, this condition is known as GERD. When LES becomes weak, it allows this sort of reflux to take place. Do's and don't s:-
-Foods like fried items should be avoided.
-Chocolate and peppermint intake quantity should be decreased greatly.

-Citrus fruits and juices should not be allowed in diet.
-Tomato use in food preparation should be decreased.

-Weight control is greatly beneficial. Maintaining normal weight and reducing if being overweight helps in control of acid reflux.
-Portion sizes in meal intake should be small. Large meals are difficult to digest. Small 5-6 meals a day helps in easy digestion.
-Starvation should not be promoted. Frequent meals every 3 hours is very essential.
-Daily intake of 2-2.5 liters of water greatly helps in flushing down acid reflux and providing relief in heart burn and acidity.
-Cigarette and other sorts of tobacco products are not good for GERD patients. It further weakens LES resulting in worsening of GERD.
-While sleeping, GERD patients should keep their heads elevated to 6-inch blocks which will greatly help in relieving heart burn problem.
-Prescriptions given by doctor should be taken daily without fail.
-Antacids along with some foaming agents can relieve acidity in GERD patients.
-Along with antacids, H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitor also can be taken to treat GERD.
-Loose fitting clothes should be wore by GERD patients as it is very essential to not exert excess of pressure on abdomen.
-While lying down, do not try to stuff a lots of pillows underneath head as it may increase the pressure on abdomen resulting in reflux.
-Carbonated beverages should be avoided.
-Garlic and onions should be completely cut off from the diet.
-Diet should be high in fiber and low in fat which includes vegetables, non-citrus fruits, whole grains, lean meat etc.....
-Include over ripe bananas in daily life.
-Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen excess intake.
-Exercise daily along with yoga practice.
