Generally speaking, in most of the case cases, GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes. However, some people may require medication or even surgery in complicated cases. Acid reflux disease is a condition in which the stomach contents gradually leak backward from the stomach into the esophagus i.e. the alimentary canal which connects the throat to the stomach.
Some of the lifestyle changes which are likely to help in GERD are as follows -
1. Do not lie down immediately after eating at any time during the day.
2. Take dinner at least 2-3 hours before bedtime.
3. Maintain the head side of bed elevated by at least 6 inches.
4. Don't take large meals at a time. Instead spread the total food intake throughout the day in smaller sizes.
5. Quit smoking.
6. Avoid alcohol.
7. Reduce weight.
8. Avoid fatty/greasy foods, chocolate, caffeine, spicy foods, citrus foods and other food items which are likely to worsen the condition.
9. Keep an upright posture when standing or sitting.
10. Avoid over the counter painkillers.
Regarding medicines, the same should be taken in consultation with a medical professional only, be it allopathic or homeopathic or siddha.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a disorder of digestive system. Between esophagus and stomach, there is a muscle in the shape of ring. This is known as lower esophageal sphincter (LES). In GERD, this ring muscle gets affected. When contents of stomach flows back upwards in esophagus, this condition is known as GERD. When LES becomes weak, it allows this sort of reflux to take place. Individuals in whom LES is strong and relaxes very appropriately, do not experience this sort of reflux.
