IBPS assists banks in recruiting the clerical and officer staff for banks by conducting recruitment process of test and interview,. It also assists banks in their p promotion tests.
IBPS is an autonomous body, registered under the terms of society and trust. It serves as a competent set up in handling the recruitment of suitable personnel for the banking sector. However Insurance companies, Central & other financial section organisations, Specialized Academic Institutions and even private organisations also use their services.
It is not a government organisation. It is an associate member of Indian Banks Association(IBA) and its governing board contains mostly members of IBA and Reserve Bank and Central Government officials connected to banking administration. There are professional and academic experts also in the IBPS as head of various divisions.
IBPS is not a product of sudden birth. It has evolved over many decades since 1969 when banks were nationalised and National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) was formed. From 1978 there came Banking Service Recruitment Board(BSRB) which was seeing and co-ordinating recruitment of banking personnel. However, after BSRB "s dissolution banks felt the difficulty and in 1984 the Personnel Selection Service division, whose services banks were using was converted to IBPS.
Apartment from recruitment IBPS also renders assistance in internal promotion in banks by conducting the promotion tests, as per request by the banks.
