Eligibility criteria for PSUs if one gets lesser score in academics

Worried about low academic scores not making you eligible for PSU? Find out what is the eligibility criteria to get into a PSU.

I have completed my mechanical engineering, but I have a lower aggregate percentage of below 60 %. Can I get into PSUs if I score good marks in GATE exam? Is it enough to get a good GATE score into PSUs without having 60% in academics?

The eligibility criteria for recruitment vary from company to company. There are many factors like percentage of marks in engineering degree ( may be at 10, 10+2 levels also), the stream of engineering, age and nationality etc. The criteria are relaxed in case of the reserved category candidates as per extant rules. The number of companies recruiting through GATE score is gradually increasing and in the year 2015, more than 27 companies had adopted this system of recruitment.
Some of the main PSU companies adopting system of recruitment through GATE score are - IRCON, DMRC, BSPCL, DRDO, RITES, ONGC, NFL, IPR, PSPCL, PSTCL, MDL, BPCL, IOCL, HPCL, GAIL, NLC, CEL, NBCC, NHPC, BHEL, NTPC, WBSEDCL, Oil India, Power Grid, NHAI, KRIBHCO, MRVC Ltd, MECL, NALCO, AAI, BNPM, NTC, EdCIL India and Coal India Ltd etc. In addition, the Cabinet Secretariat, Govt. of India has also used GATE score for recruitment.
Generally, the minimum set criteria regarding marks at engineering degree level is 60% to 65%. However, as mentioned above, the criteria varies from company to company. Therefore only after studying the detailed advertisement issued by the specific company, the picture is likely to be clear.
Although generally speaking there may not be any relaxation in the advertised percentage of marks but still, it is advisable for the author to work hard and score maximum possible score in GATE. The effort made by the author is not likely to go in vain.

The public undertaking companies do have their own criteria of selection and the mostly all the public undertakings have fixed 65 percent as the minimum marks in the B.Sc ( Engg) examinations and failing the same would not allow to apply for Graduate Engineering vacancy.
There are certain Public undertaking companies such as SAIL, BHEL, ONGC, DVC etc which attach much importance to GATE score but the minimum scoring of marks of final B.Sc ( Engg) remains unaltered. The GATE score make the aspirants entitled to two additional increments in some public undertakings.
With respect to your last query, a good score in GATE would not make you eligible to apply unless you fulfil the minimum percentage of marks.
