How sound waves are different from electromagnetic waves?

Nowadays much discussions and debates are going on about possible side effects of electromagnetic waves emitted by the mobile phones etc. Many people use such devices for listening to music etc. also. Are the sound waves produced by the musical instruments and electromagnetic waves emitted by the mobile phones same? How sound waves are different than the electromagnetic waves?

Mobile phones convert our voice i.e., sound energy into an electrical signal. These electrical signals so converted are then transmitted in the form of radio waves. In this way, sound energy in mobile phones is converted into electromagnetic waves. It travels on the other side i.e., to the receiver and he will receive these electromagnetic waves converted back in the form of sound.

Musical instruments produce pure sound energy but it is not true in case of music that comes out of mobile phones. One should avoid listening to music from their mobile phones and the reason is that electromagnetic waves are reaching our ears and these waves has hazardous effects on our health. If we listen to music via ear buds provided with the mobile phones then we are at risk of introducing three times more electromagnetic radiation directly into our ear canal and brain when compared to listening music without ear buds.

Hazardous effects of electromagnetic energy from mobile phones:-
1) Brain tumors,
2) Tissue heating,
3) Glioma,
4) Increase in heart rate,
5) Increase in blood pressure,
6) Sleep disturbance etc.....

Sound waves and Electromagnetic waves:-
1) Sound waves require a medium to travel whereas electromagnetic waves do not require any medium to travel.
2) Sound waves travel through media such as solid, liquid, gas and plasma whereas electromagnetic waves travel in a vacuum.
3) Sound waves travel with the speed of 343m/s at 20 degree Celsius and electromagnetic waves travel with the speed of 3.00 x10exp8 m/s i.e., velocity of sound waves is less than that of electromagnetic waves.

Sound waves create waves in the medium by which they pass. Sound waves need a medium. Sound cannot travel in vacuum.

But electro magnetic waves travel by themselves and they do need a medium, and can travel in vacuum also.

High decibel sound waves may affect our thin eardrum and any thin membrane in our body including the soft walls of heart or other organs by the impact and causing disturbances. However sound waves can be prevented by thick ear plugs without giving gap. Electro magnetic waves cannot be prevented by cotton plugs or by closing by hand.

One can shield maximum from disturbances sound by sitting inside a closed room with doors and windows closed. But electromagnetic waves cannot be prevented by that. That is why we get radio and mobile signal even inside a closed room.

Sound waves cannot cause cancer. Electromagnetic waves can cause cancer on long exposure or acute exposure with high energy. Harmful effects caused by EM waves and radiation can cause hereditary problems also. However sound wave damages cause problems to the person affected. Many of the harms caused by sound(other than those caused by bomb explosions etc) can be reversed gradually or by medical procedure.

While sound waves can give shock effects EM radiations are invisible, not-audible and could not be felt in most cases unless those from nuclear bombs or those high energy ones from very near the source. High sounds cause vibration in other materials also, but EM radiations do not cause any such visible or notable effects on other materials

Sound wave is a mechanical wave which moves through a medium. It can't move through vacuum. On the other hand, electromagnetic waves are waves which can travel through the vacuum of outer space. Electromagnetic waves on't require any medium for moving.

Sound wave is not generally harmful. Ultrasounds are used for treatment of various medical purposes like treatment of kidney stones. On the other hand, prolonged exposure to electromagnetic waves can cause tumour, cancer and various other problems which can pass on to the next generations.

What happens in a communication process? I will explain with the help of land line phone. When you are talking over the phone, there is two holes one at the upper side other on the lower side in the apparatus holding in hand. Upper hole is receiver and the lower hole is microphone. The microphone converts sound into an electrical signal and transmitted in the form of radio waves. In this way, sound energy in landline phones is converted into electromagnetic waves. It travels on the other side to the receiver and will receive these electromagnetic waves converted back in the form of sound.
Difference between sound and EMW
1. Sound waves travel through a medium whereas electromagnetic waves do not require any medium.
2. Sound waves travel with the speed of 340 m/s and electromagnetic waves travel with the speed of 3lac km/second.
3,More than 80 decibel sound waves may affect our ears. Electromagnetic waves can cause cancer. Harmful effects caused by EMW and radiation can alter jeans and can lead to jeans mutation.
