Query about Electromagnetic Energy Conversion Principle

Having a query about electromechanical energy converters? Searching for its details? On this Ask Expert page you will find the answers you are searching for.

Electromechanical Energy Converters convert electrical energy to mechanical energy and vice versa.
They can use both electric and magnetic fields as coupling medium but why most of the Electromechanical Energy Conversion devices use magnetic field and not electric field as the coupling medium between electrical and mechanical systems?

Motors and Generators are run by Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction principle.
Motor is a device in which electrical energy is converted to mechanical energy. Generator is a device in which mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy. In both cases , we use magnetic field in which laminated core cuts the magnetic lines of force. The direction of magnetic lines of force is north pole to south pole outside the magnet and south pole to north pole inside the magnet.
In both cases, electromechanical energy converts electrical energy to mechanical energy or mechanical energy to electrical energy and it works in the magnetic field.

Electromechanical conversation systems such as motors and generators relay upon magnetic field as their coupling medium due to its low energy. Though electrical field can also be used theoretically in electromechanical conversation, it poses high energy to establish a definite amount of field. This high energy coupling may be threat to mechanical equipment and needs extra insulation without which the shaft may conduct high leakage current. More over the creation of magnetic field some times requires
no energy as permanent magnets can be placed in slots. This reduces the extra consumption of energy for energy conversation.

According to Faraday Law, "when an current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it produces electo motive force EMF" or simply voltage that drives electrons to form current. The same law also states that "when current carrying conductor is kept in a magnetic field it experiences force or torque". The first law is applicable for generator and the second for the motor but you can observe one same parameter that is magnetic coupling.

Michael Faraday had developed this concept and the later research proved that these electromechanical conversation systems with magnetic coupling are efficient, rigid and reliable when compared with electric field coupling systems.

Electro-mechanical Energy Converters are run by Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. Motor is a device in which electrical energy is converted to mechanical energy, in generator vice-versa.
Faraday's first law is -the law of electromagnetic induction, which states when an current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it produces electo motive force EMF. The second law states that the induced emf is equal to the rate of change of flux.

    – Electromechanical energy conversion theory is the
cornerstone for the analysis of electromechanical motion
    devices.
    – The theory allows us to express the electromagnetic force
or torque in terms of the device variables such as the
currents and the displacement of the mechanical system.
    – Since numerous types of electromechanical devices are
used in motion systems, it is desirable to establish methods
of analysis which may be applied to a variety of
electromechanical devices rather than just electric
    machines.
