Iris is unique for each person. So it is a best way to establish the identity of a person in disputed situation and finger print of all fingers also is not able to establish the identity. As the Aadhaar scheme is under the Unique Identity data records scheme, the iris photos of each person are taken in addition to the finger prints.

Aadhar card was designed as an unique identification system for the citizen. And for it to become unique, it required unique identification mechanism that only fingerprints and IRIS scan could provide. So the system includes the way to store the IRIS and Finger print bio-metric data. This can be useful for many systems which may want to use the customer or the citizen's identity. For example, banking, passport etc.
