Should I apply for MA through Distance Education?

Wondering if MA -distance is worth it? Confused between a regular and distance degree in terms of scope and validity? Here, on this page you can check out responses from experts.

Is it of any value if I complete my MA in History through Distance Education ( like from IGNOU) and then apply for NET later?
Or, is a degree from CDOL not worth it and will not serve any purpose?
I am in my final year of graduation and I am pursuing it from a regular college (DU).

MA from IGNOU is treated on par with any other recognised university MA. MA History definitely you can do by distance mode of education and then apply for NET. With graduation, you can't go for NET. You can go for B>Ed. For NET you should complete post graduation. That can be from IGNOU also.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is a Central University approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). All courses offered by this University are recognised and are at par with similar courses offered by any other UGC-approved University. So, after obtaining the degree of M.A in History from IGNOU, you can do what any other student of M.A in History from any other recognised University can do. These are:-
    (a) Appearing in Indian Civil Services Examination
    (b) Appearing State Civil Services Examination
    (c) Apply for PhD in any branch of History
    (d) Appear in NET provided you score 55% marks in MA (History)
    (e) Apply for lectureship in any college
    (f) Apply for working as a teacher in any school, etc.

Please don't have any doubt regarding the recognition of degree obtained from IGNOU.

    Caution: Explosive. Handle with care.

You don't have to think twice about doing MA in History from IGNOU through distance education mode. The certificate you get after passing out has value and is considered equal to the regular study. Nowhere in the certificate, it will be mentioned as distance education. The advantage of attending regular classes is that you have a tutor to teach you and you have friends and you have the whole atmosphere to study. Whenever doubts arise, you can check with the teacher or consult with classmates. When you are doing distance education through any centers or institutes, still you have the opportunities for all the above. But if you are intending to do self-study, try to arrange a tutor for the difficult subject or so. If you are able to manage it yourself well and good.

With regards to applying and appearing for NET, you can definitely apply for it with the MA History qualification from IGNOU through distance education. I have done PG through distance education from Calicut University and have appeared for NET exam. You can appear for NET during your last year of PG itself, and even if you clear NET, you have time to submit your documents which includes the PG certificate. It is better to appear for NET while doing PG itself, as you will be fresh and you have a clear idea of what you are studying. If you appear for NET after PG, then you might not recollect all the things you learned and will have to study from scratch.

To conclude, don't be doubtful and waste your time and years. Register for MA History with IGNOU (Distance Education)and start studying. Meanwhile prepare for NET as well
