APK is the file format that is used in the Android platform for installing the app in devices having Android system. The abbreviation APK stands for Android Package Kit which is basically an Android Application Package to distribute and install apps.

It contains all the elements that an app needs to install correctly on one's Android device.

Clicking an APK file on your Android device will install that app. This is a manual way of installing and is called sideloading.

Normally when we visit Google Play Store to download an app, it automatically downloads and installs the APK.

Android application package (APK) is the package file format. It is used by the Google's Android Operating System for distribution and installation of Mobile Apps. It is also used for middleware. APK files are an archive file, in zip format packages based on the JAR file format. It is having .apk as the filename extension.
To make an APK file, a program for Android is first written. Then all of its parts are combined into one file. An APK file contains all program codes, resources, assets, certificates, and manifest file. APK files can have any name needed, provided that the file name ends in ".apk". APK files can be installed on Android-powered devices as we install software on our PC.

Android Application Package(Android package kit) is the full form of Apk. Apk is the file format used by the android OS. An apk file cotains all of that program's code, certificates, resources and manifest file. Apk file is package which contains installation of mobile applications. When you finish developing your app and want make it public for users then we compile project and pack into .apk file.

APK, Andriod package kit is basically a package file format that enables us to use the many mobile apps.
About 10 years ago, many mobile set companies (Samsung,HTC) and Google formed the Open Handset Alliance. This consortium of 84 firms was to have a common mobile platform for Android devices.

APK files are similar to archive files and have .apk as the filename extension. So, its similar to the software we download on our PC. APK files can have any name but have to end in .apk. APK is also used by android to distribute and upload middleware programs (this is a software that bridges an operating system and the applications we run).

There are many misleading names as apkpure, akpmirror etc, they are said to be safe but modified programs or games do exist. There are so many apk sharing sites that it is difficult to know which is safe and which is not. Hence it is recommended that when we download an app, we should do it via the play store of Google or Amazon store.

APK as hinted in the question itself is a file extension or file format used in android operating system to distribute and install applications for the mobile devices with android operating system.
As given in most previous answer posts, it is Android Package or Android Package Kit.
Similar package or file format in Microsoft Windows is APPX . In the 'Debian' based operating system it is 'deb' package.
It is a compilation 'package' containing all the needed codes etc for the program.

Just as we install software in our personal computers, APK files can be installed for applications in android devices.

APK stands for Android Package and it is the packet file format used by the android operating system for distributing and installation of mobile apps. APK files are a type of archive file with .apk as the file extension and usually it contains the following files and directories:

    META-INF Directory:
MANIFEST.MF: Which is a manifest file
CERT.RSA: This is a certificate of application
CERT.SF: This contains list of resources and SHA-1 digest of the corresponding lines in the MANIFEST.MF File.
