At home one needs some user experience to know whether the coconut oil is pure, rancid or adulterated .
Good and pure coconut oil will have a very natural pleasant aroma. The aroma will invite us to taste it. Pure coconut oil will taste good with a very mild sweetness of good ripe coconut. It will be smooth on tongue and easy and tasty to swallow.

f the coconut oil has gone rancid, the odour will tell us. A drop or two on our tongue will make us dislike it and may make us spit it out. But if it is just beginning to go rancid, then it may not be smelling so bad,but when tasted it will make us feel distaste at the throat end after we swallow.

How to know if coconut oil is adulterated with other oils:
Usually palm oil is mixed with coconut oil nowadays mostly, as palm oil is also used for cooking and is relatively low priced. It may not be very easy for all to identify palm oil adulteration if it is kept at low level percentages. But an experienced user can find it out.
The adulterated coconut oil will be more yellow than transparent white.
It will be less thick than the normal pure coconut oil.
On heating the oil in a vessel it will start smelling burnt even at lower heat.

In Kerala earlier Rubber oil was used for adulterating coconut oil. This can be easily found out, as the oil starts frothing immediately on heating it even at low temperatures.

Food items cooked with good and pure coconut oil will smell and taste good even after many hours.
Those food items cooked or fried in adulterated coconut oil will go rancid fast and start tasting bad after a few hours itself. The items may go cold and rough. But chips fried with good unadulterated coconut oil will be more crispy and will have more shelf life.

Pure coconut oil will freeze and solidify in relatively faster. If we keep a little coconut oil in fridge (no need to keep in freezer compartment)after about an hour or two so it would have started freezing. If any other oil or mineral oil are added, then they will either remain as liquid as a top layer, or lie as a membrane like layer.
If we dip a lamp wick or cloth piece in coconut oil and burn it, even the burning odour will not be that offensive. But if it has adulteration the burning odour will be offensive even in small doses.
There are chemical based analysis, but are not feasible or practical in our kitchen.

Coconut oil is about 50 percent lauric acid, a rare medium-chain fatty acid and is now being studied for its anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial health-protecting properties.Coconut oil contains 92% saturated fats
Pure coconut oil can be known by smell, density and saponification value. But Density and saponification values you can't get it done in the house. You have to go to a lab. A pure coconut oil will have light taste, pleasant aroma and pure white colour.
The pure coconut oil will get solidified easily. If there are any other ingredients the solidification will not be complete. So you can test the purity by taking 2 or 3 spoons of the coconut oil and keeping it in your refrigerator for about 4 to 6 hours. If you observe complete solidification, you can infer that it is pure. Even Olive oil also pass this test. But olive oil is more costly than Coconut oil. Hence they will not mix. If there is no complete solidification and some liquid is there above the solid you can infer that there is a mix-up. The solid is only coconut oil and the remaining is a cheap oil.

Well, There are many things by which we can identify the purity and quality of any coconut oil. The first thing to identifying purity of coconut oil is color. Put coconut oil on a refrigerator until oil gets solid. If you see any shade of grey and yellow color in the oil that means it is of an low -quality and low-grade oil because pure coconut oil is colorless. Any bruising is a sign of stained and ruined. There smell and taste also helps in identifying the purity of oil. Price of coconut oil you buy is also matters. If any oil is cheap then I think those oils are not pure oil. There is some enduring impurities in very inexpensive oil. At the time of unboxing and after opening a jar, try smelling it. If it smells like roasted coconut that means coconut oil is pure and if it smells like smoke that means it is of an inferior quality. Talk about which coconut oil you should choose then I recommend you to buy coconut oil of parachute which is really a good oil. Users gave good reviews on this oil and also high rating.

Nowadays we hardly found any pure food items in market. Almost everything came with adulteration in it. Coconut oil is also among them. So, when we buy it from market we must be careful about that we are buying only pure one. Because adulterated coconut oil is not only bad in taste but also harmful for our health too.
There are so many ways to identify pure coconut oil. They are so easy to try in your home. The first thing is the price of the oil. If it is cheap, it means it contains adulteration in it. So, try to not buy such oil.
Secondly try the aroma of the oil. Pure coconut oil has superb aroma. You can easily feel the sweet pleasant smell of pure coconut oil., which is made from ripe and fresh coconut.
The another thing you can try is by using your refrigerator. Pour coconut oil in a cup or bowl , then freeze it for couple of hours. It will get solid from liquid. If the solid coconut oil looks colourless or whitish shade in it, then you can consider as pure. But after freezing it has grey color or turns too much hard then there is plenty of adulteration in it.
The pure coconut oil tastes different than an adulterated one. Pure coconut oil is smooth and is really tastes good. Even the food made with pure coconut oil is tastier than that food that are made with adulterated coconut oil.
