Retinal scans has following problems over Iris Scan:
    1. very much intrusive for a general safe use, and hence can create problem.
    2. the long exposure to scanner light emitted might be harmful to the eyes.

So, iris scanning technology is becoming more popular. Also many companies are offering iris scanning. Another benifit is that the iris is unique for each human being and and hence offers high confidence in identification.

The difference between retina and iris scanning is that retina scan uses a more invasive technique, which looks for blood vessel patterns behind the human eye while iris scanning has the most familiar characteristics that are unique to the iris are the trabecular meshwork, a tissue that gives the appearance of dividing the iris in a radial fashion.
