Date: 24 Mar 2009   Group: Doctors    Category: General Medicine

Why does we get swelling upon getting an internal injury? Does it help in recovering from the injury? I got an injury in my Index finger at the middle joint( proximal interphalangeal joint ). And it has swelled and become stiff. So I want to know that is it good that it has swelled or is it bad? What is the reason for swelling ( give detailed explanation with medical terms ). How to recover from it?

Dear Sameer,
There are many reasons for swelling in our body.It may be simple inflammation to deadly cancer. In your case, the swelling may be due to simple inflammation which is natural defense of our body in response to any form of assault. But the more likely chance is joint displacement or, tendon injury or even fracture. In all these cases inflammation and collection of blood (Haematoma)is the cause of swelling. Better get an X ray done as soon as possible to rule out displacement or, fracture.

Dear Sameer,

Swelling is the increase of the size of the particular part of the body, reason being the collection of fluid, tissue growth or abnormal positioning of the tissues around the bones.
There are many instances where in you can see swelling. If you stand for a long time you can see swelling in your legs particularly in the area of ankles.

There are many instances of swelling like this. heat edema which can happen when you are active in the sun for a long time, bruising caused by small wounds or scratches on your skin like in a vehicle accident, abscess is just a pocket of pus formed under the skin, burns, inflammation, cellulitis a skin infection, and many more like this.

It is just the body's way of showing that something is wrong.
There are many more reasons for the swellings which happen in our body. For them you just will have to go and see a physician or specialist, to get the check up done and through that, treatment as needed.

swelling at the time of injury is a compensatory mechanism
to prevent loss of blood or inter tissue trauma
but persistent swelling is not the good thing
it even interrupts the process of healing and delays
the mechanism of healing
in case of yours as it is interphalangeal joint
i think fibrosis has occupied as you might have ignored
fracture of it or any ligaments tare
if there is no pain as of now
go for mobilization of joint
and figure kneading on it

I think swelling after an injury is good. It is the result of inflammation.

Inflammation occurs after a tissue injury. It is characterised by the following 4 symptoms:

Calor-heat
Dolor-pain
Rubor-redness
Tumor-swelling

Thus if we have any injury in any part of our body first the place becomes hot then there is pain and redness. Last thing is the swelling.

This is the normal mechanism which should happen if there is a injury.

If this does not occur then there is abnormality in that person.

Hi Guys,

I am not much of an expert on this topic but i met with an accident some years back and I broke my left hand bone and had to undergo an immediate surgery as per the x-ray's but the doctors couldn't do a surgery because my left hand was fully swollen.

According to them the swelling was good as it showed normal symptoms of an injury and luckily everything turned out great and the surgery was a success.

This is my story.

Cheers

Atul G.

Hi Sameer,
swelling is good sign after an injury provided it is a temporary one i.e., it doesn't last long enough. Swelling is natural after an event of injury. It is proved by scientists that those who got swelling after the injury have more chances of healing quickly as compared to those who do not have any swelling.Even though it is a good thing, experts say that if the swelling lasts for many days and doesn't show any decrease over a long time period, it may be time for consulting a doctor. So if you have a swelling which haven't shown considerable improvement over past few weeks, it is time to consult a doctor immediately and get treatment for the swelling.
A doctor will diagnose the problem and will be helpful for stopping it from further damage. Also try to avoid any pressure or further injury to that swollen part as it may increase the injury further.
