MUMBAI: Some experts in India's thriving advertising industry are sceptical about whether the cricket board's multi-million dollar Twenty20 league will be an unqualified financial success. The officially sanctioned Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to showcase many of the sport's global big names, including Australia's Shane Warne.

The venture starts on April 18 and will be played over 44 days in eight cities with 59 matches aimed at prime-time television for Indian audiences. More than 80 international cricketers are expected to feature in a players' "auction" in Mumbai on Wednesday with each of the eight franchises having a cap of $5 million for a maximum of eight players each.

However, some experts from the advertising field say the IPL will remain a domestic tournament despite its foreign input and new city-based franchise format and that there are not many takers for the domestic game. Indian advertising guru Prahlad Kakkar told media, "The Twenty20 format is exciting and a new generation will grow on it, but the Ranji Trophy, with its share of international players for their respective states, does not have any following."

The Ranji Trophy, India's premier first-class domestic championship, is usually played to a handful of spectators and a negligible television audience. The Twenty20 format caught the imagination of India, a country of 1.1 billion with the largest global cricket audience and multi-million dollar deals, after their young team emerged surprise winners at the inaugural World Cup last year.

The victory parade for captain Mahendra Dhoni's team in Mumbai brought the financial capital to a standstill.

PASSIONATE FOLLOWING

But Kakkar said such passionate following applied only when the Indian national team was in action. "I don't think many Indians sit in front of the television when two other countries are playing," said Kakkar. "And what about the ICL? It also had several international players, but I don't think it was successful." The Indian Cricket League (ICL), bankrolled by Essel Group, which controls Zee Telefilms, India's largest listed media firm, launched their unofficial Twenty20 tournament last year but received a lukewarm response.

They had several international players in their ranks, the biggest being West Indies great Brian Lara and former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq. The IPL, seen as the Indian board's counter to the ICL, has gained tremendous momentum as organisers lure top international players with hefty pay cheques.

The international cricket community is even asking the game's governing ICC to set aside a clear slot for the league in the next Future Tours Programme to avoid a clash of interest for players on national duty. IPL's eight franchises were sold to companies and consortia for over $700 million last month after the base price for owning a team for a 10-year period was set at $50 million.

The Mumbai franchise fetched the highest at $111.9 million and was bought by the country's most valuable company, Reliance Industries. Top Bollywood names Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta are among the owners of the franchises, adding further glamour.

Pepsi pays $12.5 mn to be official IPL drink

NEW DELHI: Pepsi will be the official beverage of the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) for five years and the deal with the soft drink giant has been struck at $12.5 million.

Well-placed sources in the IPL said only the eight franchise owners would benefit from the deal.

Pepsi, which has a long association with Indian cricket, has been the main sponsor of India's domestic tournaments for several years and has also been associated with the International Cricket Council (ICC) as its global sponsor.

A significant part of the deal is that the eight franchises - Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Mohali, Jaipur and Hyderabad - will be the direct beneficiaries of the money accruing from the sponsorship.

"Pepsi will pay $2.5 million each year and, importantly, the entire income from this deal will go to the eight franchise owners," according to the IPL sources who did not wish to be identified.

In other words, each franchisee stands richer by $312,500 per year.

The team owners benefiting from this deal are Mukesh Ambani's Reliance, which bought Mumbai team for $111.9 million, Deccan Chronicle (Hyderabad, $107.01 million), Vijay Mallya's UB Group (Bangalore, $106 million), India Cements (Chennai, $91 million), GMR Holdings (Delhi, $84 million), a consortium led by Preity Zinta (Mohali, $76 million), Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies (Kolkata, $75.09 million) and Emerging Media (Jaipur, $67 million).

The Twenty20 tournament, comprising 59 matches, will be played over 45 days starting April 18. Matches will be telecast live on SET Max, which along with World Sports Group paid $1.026 billion to get the television rights for 10 years.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) story just got bigger. And global. Last week’s star spangled, multi-crore franchisee line up, which attracted a staggering $724 million from celebrity bidders, not to mention dollops of power and glamour, has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to throw the floor open to global sponsors for title sponsorship bids, a first for any domestic tournament.

The Board has set a base price of $6 million (about Rs 24 crore) per year for bids from potential title sponsors. The winning bid for title sponsor will be announced on February 6. Further, a spend of Rs 100 crore has been allocated for a three-month period beginning February-end to promote the tournament, one of the biggest spends for a corporate event in India.

Confirming these plans, IPL chairman and BCCI V-P Lalit Modi told ET, “We don’t want to limit the sponsorship to companies already operating in India, considering the interest level the tournament has generated and the profile of our franchisee and broadcasting partners. We want to reach out to even those companies which want to enter the Indian market.”

It is for the purpose of attracting global title sponsors that interested bidders are not required to buy the tender document unlike tenders for the franchisee sponsorships which needed to be purchased. The tender document for title sponsorship has been posted on the IPL website and can be downloaded by interested bidders, which simplifies the bidding procedure even for companies not yet operating in India.

ET has learnt that PepsiCo, Bharti Airtel, R-ADAG, Vodafone, Emaar-MGF, LG Electronics and DLF are among potential Indian bidders but they will have to compete with global sponsors to win the title rights. Further, even franchisee rights owners have been allowed to bid for title sponsorship. UB group, for example, can bid for title sponsorship, even though it is the franchisee owner of the Bangalore team.

Detailing plans for hard-selling the Twenty20 league, Mr Modi said, “We are going all out to promote the IPL with an ad blitz of Rs 100 crore. It will involve promoting the league through various platforms which will reflect the magnitude of the tournament.” The mandate for the creative exercise has been given to ad agency O&M while the media buying duties will be handled by Group M.

The five-year title sponsorship rights will give the winner category exclusivity on various platforms. Other than having naming rights to the league, the logo of the winning bidder will be integrated along with the logo of IPL. Other branding opportunities with the rights holder will include branding on stumps, shared branding on sightscreens, inclusion in television graphics, branding on the IPL website and in-stadia rights to promote products or services.

In addition, the winner will hold the first option to negotiate renewal of rights after the five-year term expires.
IPL’s fanchisee owners include Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani who acquired the Mumbai team, Vijay Mallya’s UB group which has won the Bangalore team, actor Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment which won the Kolkata team, and a consortium of Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul which won the Chandigarh team in a high-profile auction last week.

Earlier this month, the World Sports Group (WSG), Sony Entertainment Televisin (SET) combine won the broadcast rights for $918 million.

NEW DELHI: Eighteen years after he first played for India, Anil Kumble, all along the me-too of Indian advertising in the age of poster boys like Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, may have finally arrived as much off the field as on it.

India’s historic win over Australia at Perth, right after his statesmanlike handling of the Sydney crisis, is being seen as the turning point in the leg-spinner’s off-the-field career.

Advertisers say Kumble’s valuation would go up several notches and could touch Rs 70-80 lakh, which till now has been averaging at anywhere between Rs 30-50 lakh. “He may even cross Rs 1 crore if he continues this way,” said a source.

Broadcaster hikes spot rates for Perth Test

Percept Holdings joint MD Shailendra Singh, who’s worked closely with a slew of Indian sportstars, did not mince words: “To be honest, all of us have always ignored Kumble, even when he became captain, and he didn’t have a huge valuation. However, he has added a new dimension to his resume - that of an outstanding leader in very serious circumstances - which is sure to make a huge difference to his brand valuation.”

Incidently, Kumble’s career graphic bears a striking resemblence to his brand fortunes. Just as he never really got the recognition due from cricket fans, he has also been the forgotten man of Indian cricket when it came to celebrity endorsement. Despite scripting innumerable Indian victories in the 1990s, he was always overshadowed by the likes of Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.

And in the last few years, while the stock of Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni and Virender Sehwag rose spectacularly, Kumble remained confined to the sidelines.

Despite the 18 years, Kumble’s brand value always remained lower than his more high-profile and often younger colleagues - many of them in the Rs 1-croreplus bracket. “Bowlers in any case do not get as much as batsmen - unfortunately that’s the way advertisers perceive endorsement deals,” said another source.

All that may now change. Advertisers say though Kumble may still not be considered cool, he has emerged as an ideal candidate for ‘mature and serious’ categories like banks, credit cards, insurance, educational services and a few apparel brands.

Said Future Brands CEO Santosh Desai: “There was a certain sweatiness to Kumble’s personality that did not go down well with brands, but the circumstances under which he led the team at Perth has finally given him the image of a gritty leader.”

As veteran adman Prahlad Kakkar, who’s shot ad films with many cricketers, pointed out: “Kumble has always had a serious image and he has been relatively unexciting for brand associations but all that is set to change. He has shown he’s not just captain, but captain courageous.”

Officials at Athletes1 India, the sports marketing company that manages Kumble, could not be reached for comments.

Delhi Daredevils
NEW DELHI: Everything is new. Even when it comes to who's running the game. Even the lights here at the Ferozeshah Kotla. Far from the glitzy launch of the IPL in Bangalore, Delhi spent all of Friday gearing up for its own acid test.

The explosive start to the tournament in Bangalore was just what the doctor ordered. The franchisee is hoping the first game here, between Sehwag's Delhi Daredevils and Warne's Team Jaipur on Saturday, will whip up sustainable fan frenzy. There will be pressure, though, to sustain the intensity, to follow-up on Friday's tremendous opening.

IPL to take cricket to a new level

Crowds here will be hoping the entertainment matches the hoopla. The association, relegated to the backbench, has nothing much to do except 'loan' its turf and watch. The cheerleaders haven't arrived yet. All the fancy costumes will be unveiled only on match day. It's a tightrope walk over unchartered territory.

Where does that leave the cricketers? Out in the middle on match day, answering questions about showbiz packages on offer the day before. At least Gautam Gambhir, bombarded with questions over whether he was looking forward to seeing Akshay Kumar dance, was candid. "No", he answered, "We're all professionals here, and my job happens to be to play the game. That will be my focus. The entertainment is for the fans, not for us."

That sums it up beautifully. If the IPL is to make waves as an entertainment package, it needs intense sporting competition. Half-baked measures will not do. Antiseptic corporate planning will not cut it on the field.

It's all up to the players, and the Daredevils are spoilt for choice, even without the likes of AB De Villiers or Mohammad Asif. Glenn McGrath has been bowling beautifully at the nets. The fielding is expected to be electric. The team can probably boast the best set of local players in the league, all in fine fettle. There are no major injury worries, and Team Jaipur are expected to be easy opponents first-up.

The South Africans and Pakistanis are missing from Shane Warne's kitty. So is Dmitri Mascarenhas. Shane Watson is there, though. Some catchment area players are very good - like Kaif and Yusuf Pathan - but overall they aren't a patch on the quality of the opponents.

But this is T20, and the fun lies in keeping your fingers crossed till the end. It's not wise to write off anyone, at any time. Can Sehwag outdo Brendon McCullum's stunning heroics? Now that's pressure of another sort.

IPL changes its own rules
MUMBAI: Less than a month after announcing a final list of players for the DLF Indian Premier League that kicked off on Friday at Bangalore, the organisers of the Twenty20 tournament seem to have forgotten it by allowing some franchise teams to include additional players.

The Bangalore Royal Challengers, led by Rahul Dravid and owned by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, did not have Australian pace bowler Ashley Noffke in the final list of names, but he surprisingly made an appearance and played in the opener at the Chinnanwawamy Stadium yesterday.

Even the official website of the tournament in the second list of players representing all the eight franchise teams, did not have his name even a day after he had turned out for the Bangalore team.

IPL to take cricket to a new level

News has now come from the West Indies that all rounder Dwayne Bravo is to play for the Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians which could not be confirmed as sources in the squad could only say "we were having negotiations with the player but do not know their outcome" when they were informed of the development.

Strangely, the website does not have any information about the playing conditions for the much-hyped-about event which has drawn the attention of the cricket world because of the amount of money that had been spent to buy the players through the auction process, something unique to the willow game.

Asked for this information more than a month ago, IPL Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi had said they were identical to the playing conditions for the T20 World Cup won by India in South Africa last September, and the authorities seemed to have decided that it's the duty of the media persons covering the event to dig out this information on their own.

The website, which has been sold by the organisers USD 50 million, also did not have updated information with the scoreboard incomplete on the afternoon after the completion of the first match.

The match update was also absent, though there's a latest news section, till the afternoon after the conclusion of the tie. Neither did it have any information about the match officials who have been appointed for the matches and media personnel had to hunt for these and get them.

Incidentally, because of the selling of exclusive online rights to the North American website the IPL authorities had put stringent terms and conditions for the media persons, both print and electronic, seeking accreditations.

There was widespread resentment in the media over some of the conditions over photographs and at one stage the print and electronic media were even threatening to boycott the tournament, leading to protracted negotiations with IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi after which a compromise was reached.

The news agencies are, even now, barred from providing photographs of the happenings in the matches to cricket-dedicated portals and foreign agencies like AP, AFP and Rueters are still not covering the event.

IPL matches
NEW DELHI: The ad world, media, sportsmen and even the glamour industry are busy speculating on the money making potential of India’s cricket T20 party.

But it’s the bookies and their clients who are sure to reap a windfall with the Indian Premier League (IPL). In fact, the format is a gambler’s paradise. After the first match of IPL, it seemed that SRK may do a Chak De on the cricket field too.

Kolkata emerged as favourite team for bookmakers and satorias after their great performance on Friday. However, things changed after the second match between Chennai Super Kings and Mohali Kings XI Punjab. The odds have now tilted towards Chennai Super Kings taking their stake to 100:145.

The odds were heavily loaded in the favour of SRK’s Kolkata Knight Riders specially after their sensational 140-run victory over Bangalore’s Royal Challengers, riding on Brendon McCullum’s blistering strokeplay.

But before going to the press, the betting odds shifted in favour of Chennai Super Kings when they scored 240 for 5 which was much more than 222 for 3 by Kolkata Knight Riders in the first IPL match. Chennai is now at the top of the chart with odds of 1:145.

So if you bet Rs 100 on them, you will get back Rs 145. The stakes on the Kolkata team are 1:155, if you bet Rs 100 on Knight Riders you will be richer by Rs 155.

The bookmakers and satorias in Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Agra, which are major centres for betting, are looking at this as a mega event and it is estimated that Rs 200-400 cr was up for grabs on Friday. The satta bazaar estimates that at least Rs 20,000 cr will be wagered on the IPL’s 59 matches over a period of 44 days.

A leading bookie said, “This is a new form of cricket where players from many other countries are playing together in one team so initially the interest of people betting was not so much. But after the second half of Friday’s match there has been a great response to betting.”

Well I sort of felt (and a lot of people agreed), that a person should have some time to get up, and have a chance to turn off the alarm before Clocky runs away. So we allow for one snooze. If the person using Clocky is alert as soon a they hear the alarm, the may opt to disable to snooze button. We found that Clocky does not need to employ sensor technology to do his job. He may bump into objects on the floor or hit a wall, but because he is programmed to change directions a few times, he will usually get ‘unstuck.’ We have a couple more versions of Clocky in R&D. Future versions of the clock will employ more sophisticated technology to achieve some exciting features we have planned. We envision an entire Clocky product line.
