My only suggestion is that first they have to fix their goal and they should work towards that goal.According to swami vivekananda "Arise awake stop not till the goal is reached". This should apply for every one . students should have very clarity while setting their goals then they should fix small goals which leads to their ultimate goal.

Now a days schools Providing very much information about this or parents can give right guidance and moreover do not compel them for parents wishes. First parents know their student's capabilities and talents and guide them moving on right way. They can help the childs to select their carrier. And whenever a child select a career ,set that goal, work hard for that...surely they will reach top.
