Why people still believe in miraculous powers of magical remedies to cure disease? Many people may not be aware that there is a law in India known as the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 which controls advertising of drugs in India. It makes it a cognizable offence to advertise drugs and remedies, claiming the same to have magical properties. There is a provision of a penalty of up to 6 months imprisonment on first conviction and imprisonment of up to 1 year on subsequent conviction.
However, sometimes we come across some programs on television channels advertising such products.
As per the said law, advertising of drugs and remedies as having magical properties for certain diseases mentioned therein is prohibited. Some of such diseases are - rheumatism, epilepsy, pleurisy, obesity, venereal diseases etc.
