How many medals India may win in the Rio 2016 Olympics?

In the 2012 London Olympics, India had won total 6 medals, 2 silver and 4 bronze. Silver medals were won by Vijay Kumar (Shooting) and Sushil Kumar (Wrestling) and bronzes by Saina Nehwal (Badminton), Mary Kom (Boxing), Gagan Narang (Shooting) and Yogeshwar Dutt (Wrestling).
As far as the Rio 2016 Olympics is concerned, the hopefuls are expecting to enter at least a double digit and the skeptics are expecting a tally of less than 5.
The realistic assessors are indicating 2 medals in Shooting (Jitu Rai, Abhinav Bindra, Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Gagan Narang), 1 medal in Tennis (Sania Mirza, Prarthana Thombare, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna), 1 medal in Badminton (Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth) and 1 medal in Wrestling (Yogeshwar Dutt and Narsingh Yadav).

Yesterday cannot be today; Today cannot be tomorrow. Hence, it is very difficult to predict what would be the outcome of Olympics. In sports, nothing can be predicted or assumed. A fraction of second decides the winner or the loser. A single point makes lot of difference. I expect Indian Olympic team to perform well and return with sufficient medals to feel proud. It is a shame that India being the second largest in this world is not able to improve their medal tally with a good number of medals. What we lack? We need to study and analyze the cause.

For the first time in the history of Olympics more than 100 Indian competitors are participating in nearly 15 sports in Rio 2016. So the chance of winning medals is high compared to the previous years. It is also noted that the players who have already bagged medals in the previous years were unable to strike medals in the next Olympics and so we cannot predict the count of the medals. It all purely depends upon a player's hard work, smart work, determination and obviously some luck.

If we go through last 3-4 Olympics record by India, we see that in every Olympics individual performances are better. 2008 Olympics we got 3 medals, 2012 Olympics we got 6 medals. We hope for the best in this Rio Olympic. Unlikely in the past we always dependent on male Hockey to get a medal, now the time has changed. I am sure Indian will perform better once again.
