- #574233Pushkara, known as Pushkaralu in Telugu is celebrated once in 12 years along the banks of 12 major sacred rivers in India. According to the legends, a Brahmin was granted a boon by God Shiva after a severe penance that he will be able to live in water and purify the holy rivers. Later the Brahmin came to be known as Pushkara.
Each river is associated with a Zodiac sign and the when the Jupiter travels from one zodiac sign to the other, the festival Pushkara is celebrated on the bank of river associated with the Zodiac sign concerned.
The next Pushkara festival , Kaveri Pushkaram will be celebrated on the bank of river Kaveri during the period September 12–23, 2017, followed by Bhima Pushkaram on the bank of river Tamraparni during September 12–23, 2018.
In north India, the festival will be celebrated on the banks of river Ganga, Narmada, Saraswati and Yamuna in the years 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 respectively.
