According to the legends, a Brahmin was granted a boon by God Shiva after a severe penance that he will be able to live in water and purify the holy rivers. Later the Brahmin came to be known as Pushkara.
Each river is associated with a Zodiac sign and the when the Jupiter travels from one zodiac sign to the other, the festival Pushkara is celebrated on the bank of river associated with the Zodiac sign concerned.
