Do you support establishment of Nuclear Power Plants in your region?

With great difficulty Kudamkulam nuclear plant first phase which starts providing 6,498 Mwe. working to its 100% capacity was inaugurated and dedicated to the Nation by by PM Modi, Russia President Putin and Tamilnadu CM Ms. Jayalalitha on 10th of this month. Center want to establish one more nuclear power plant in this region. Central and State governments tried to establish two more such plants in Kerala in the past but due to severe restraint from the people of Kannuru and Ernakulam regions have withdrawn the proposals. Central government tied up with Russia to establish one more mega power plant in Kowada region of Srikakulam district of A.P. In that region also people are opposing the construction of such nuclear power plant. But government persuading the affected people by heavy compensation.
Nuclear power plants are known to be a great gift for generating large quantum of energy which serves the needs of a fast developing country like India. If the establishment of these plants follow all protection norms, the power generation from these plants is safe and eliminates the pollution caused through thermal power plant. Members, do you invite the establishment of such nuclear power plants in your region if governments think your region is suitable for such construction? Do you support in favor of such nuclear power plants in India? Discuss the various issues of this problem.

People always concerned about the negative impacts; positive thoughts will come once in hundred negatives. The same things about the term 'nuclear'; which is fixed with a negative instinct among people. With this word 'Nuclear plant', people belief that there could be high loss to environment and as well as human being. However, there is nothing like that. As said by the author, Human being will highly benefited with this project due to the production and supply of power generation is very safe as compared to thermal power plants. There is lack of information and knowledge among people; such information should be taught through various television programs and ads in cinema halls. Because, people watching in TV and theatres will never forget; and it could be a great promotion by government of India.

It is a fact that nuclear plants are a great gift as they generate humongous amounts of energy. But, they generate nuclear radiation too. The effects of radiation will be very severe. Just imagine the situation during Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. A minute mistake is enough to create a massive destruction. If the nuclear plants are constructed in isolated areas, there is no problem. But, it is not acceptable to construct nuclear plants in/near populated areas.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited administered, by the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India is responsible for the generation of nuclear power for electricity in India.
Presently there are seven nuclear plants at Tarapur (Maharashtra), Rawatbhata (Rajasthan), Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu), Narora (Uttar Pradesh), Kakrapar (Gujarat), Kaiga (Karnataka) and Kudankulam (Tamil Nadu). A total of 21 nuclear reactors are operational at these seven locations.
After the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, in the year 2011, people in the localities around proposed nuclear plants have started protesting. Because of this reason, the proposed nuclear plants at Jaitapur (Maharashtra), Haripur (West Bengal) and Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu faced stiff opposition from the residents of the surrounding localities. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has also been filed against the nuclear plants at the Supreme Court.
In the year 2010, Nuclear Liability Act was passed to provide for nuclear radiation and safety regulations and compensation in the event of a radiation leak accident.
I think the Government is not immune to the possible safety hazard to the residents in the surroundings and such protests have become a political gimmick and a measure to milk maximum possible benefits and compensation.

Let us encourage each other in sharing knowledge.

I just came to know that a perfectly operating nuclear plant doesn't cause any harm even to the people who work there. So, a nuclear plant cannot be of any danger if the employees work properly.

As our country is developing at a faster rate the need for electricity is also increasing. Most of the States in our country have their own power shortages and problems. the thermal power plants or hydral power plants have their own limitations, hence the government is viewing the nuclear power plants as a viable source to meet the ever rising demand for electricity. Moreover the ability of the nuclear power plants to generate massive amounts of electricity and their claims to be safe and environmental friendly, influences the government to select them. Nuclear power plants are not new to our country yet people are terrified at the idea of setting up more and more nuclear power plants in the country. People are concerned about the their safety, as these reactors also produce a great deal of radio active waste. When the dangerous and toxic radio active waste is not properly disposed, it can contaminate the environment. We have also come across various accidents and mishaps at nuclear power plants in various countries, while the Fukushima disaster of Japan is a result of a natural calamity like tsunami, Chernobyl disaster of USSR, windscale nuclear accident of UK, Chalk river nuclear power plant accident of Canada and the accident at saint Laurent nuclear power station, France are a few examples of disasters at nuclear power plants, caused due to human errors.
Terrorists also view nuclear power plants as a potential target for terror attacks. Though terrorists also target dams and other industries, the disaster caused by a nuclear reactor is large, humans and animals suffer for generations, no amounts of compensation can save exposed people from cancers. The land becomes barren, while the whole environment gets polluted, the clean up takes several years and cost a fortune.
