Will the companies recruit lesser women once 6-month maternity leave law is enforced?Today the media is abuzz about the maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which is passed by the Rajya Sabha. The bill increases maternity leave from present 12 weeks to 26 weeks for two surviving children and 12 weeks for more than two children. Also, the bill proposes a 12 weeks leave for commissioning and adopting mothers.
Mandatory provision of a creche in respect of establishments having 50 or more employees has also been proposed in the bill.
The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, protects the employment of women during the time of maternity and entitles them to a full paid absence from work to take care of her child.
