Why running and swimming competitions have many varieties in Olympics?

We see many varieties of running competitions like 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m and many other types in Olympics. Similar is the case with swimming also. There is Freestyle 50m, 100m, 200m, 800m and so on. Running is just to run fast and Swimming is just to swim fast. Why these many varieties exist for these sports and not for other games and sports? Are they deliberately introduced by western countries so as to have more medals in Olympics?

Please note that running and swimming sports are totally associated with the exertion from the respective sports persons and lots of energy required for both the fields of the sports. Even for running 100 meters the players has to exert lots of energy and calories to win the position. In Swimming the way the water has to be cleared from both the hands and surge forward with movement of body and legs is the great exercise to which not all the swimmers are accustomed to. Therefore these two events are split into varies categories and the winners are adjudged as per the caliber.

As the Author: Bhuvaneswara Rao Nalla said "Running is just to run fast and Swimming is just to swim fast. Why these many varieties exist for these sports and not for other games and sports? Are they deliberately introduced by western countries so as to have more medals in Olympics?" is not correct. running competitions like 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m
10000 m,20000 M, and marathon all are unique events and requires different pattern of mussels, endurance, style and strategy. If all running events are running and all swimming is swimming then one player would have won all the events. All events are separate and unique in character.

#576897, if each event is different and each requires different pattern of muscles, then how come Michael Phelps is winning 5-6 Gold medals in each Olympics and how come Usain Bolt is winning 3 Gold medals in each Olympics? What can be the maximum difference between 100m and 200m running?

The motto of the Olympics is 'Faster, Higher, Stronger'. Since the beginning, there was a focus on the 'rack and field' events. The foot racing events, like sprints, middle- and long-distance events, race walking, hurdling etc used to represent the 'faster' component of the Olympics motto. The jumping events like long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault and throwing events like shot put, javelin, discus and hammer represent the 'higher' and 'stronger' elements of the Olympics motto. There are combined events like pentathlon, heptathlon and decathlon also which represent a combination of all the three elements of the Olympics motto. The swimming events also represent the 'faster' as well as the 'stronger' elements of the motto.

Thus we can see that though a number of games were added in the Olympics in due course with the passage of time but the 'field and track' events formed the core since the very beginning. Perhaps because of this reason more and more events were created in this category.

Regarding the aspect of winning more medals, the events are open to all competitors and the best wins.

#576904, although the events are open to all, these sports are advantageous to taller persons. We can observe from the Olympic medals lists that 80-90 percent of the times, these events are won by either US or Europeans athletes, who are generally taller in nature.

Well I think that they are introduced just to make the audience more interest regarding the shortest format of the game and I find that the most shorter format of any game make us more interesting to watch them with full curiosity. Yes they are all same but the best part is that they are really interesting to watch, it doesn't that we are watching the same sport with different format, the thing which matter is the amount of enjoyment which we get from this kind of sport with its different flavour.

#576917 - There are many events which may be more suitable for participants with shorter statures e.g. gymnastics. Similarly, events like shooting, archery, cycling, diving, sailing etc. appear to have nothing to do with the height of the players. Even tennis and badminton appear to be not favorable for the athletes with more height. The Chinese and Japanese players excel in such events.

The primary reason of our not winning medals is to start training very late when the body is fully grown leaving little chance to modify the same. The bodies are to be incubated custom made to suit the particular game since early childhood.
