Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati won the medals in men's high jump T-42 event. T-42 is a disability classification in the sports events for differently abled track-and-field athletes. Such athletes have a single 'above the knee' amputations or a comparable disability.

Thangavelu was injured in a bus accident when he was 5 years old, which left him with a permanent disability. In the case of Bhati, polio lead to a deformity in his legs.

Thangavelu has become the third Indian to win a gold medal in the Paralympics events. Prior to him, Murlikant Petkar had won a gold medal at Heidelberg in the year 1972 in the swimming event and Devendra Jhajharia had won a gold medal at Athens in the year 2004 in the Javelin Throw event.

The feat of Mariappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati at the Rio Paralympics has made us proud. Long live the sportsmen. Let us salute them for their indomitable spirit.

Let us encourage each other in sharing knowledge.

Hearty congrats to Mariappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh for getting Gold and Broze medal for India in the ongoing Para Olympics and it is really astonishing that Indian channels are not highlighting the same when compared to Rio Olympics. The way these differently able sports person are getting trained and bringing glory to the country without any hype is really worth appreciating. Unlike other sports persons, we do not even know who are such persons participating in various games at the Para Olympics. its high time for the government to show equal importance to all the games and all the players.

That is an outstanding performance. Winning gold at Paralympics is equal to winning gold at Olympics. The only difference is that this is mainly for physically disabled. Congrats to Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati for making our country proud at a world level event.

Already, TN government has announced 2cr prize to Mariyappan for this achievement. Hope that Varun Singh Bhati also get the same treatment from government.
