Annadhaan (providing free food) most sacred than any other dhaan we initiate.

During Ganesh Chathurthi navaratri celebrations we find that at all the places where the big Idols are installed, the organizers make compulsory arrangement community feeding on the last day before the Idol is immersed in the lake or river. In Hyderabad most of medium sized Idols were moved for immersion and there was Annadhaan at many places and those who are friends at many places unable to attend at every Pandal and thus to say excuse. Apart from Ganesh Chathurthi which are festivals where in community feeding is done at your place ?

Lucknow is unique in the sense as 'Bada Mangal' is celebrated here since last 400 years on a great scale. It falls on the first Tuesday of the 'Jyestha' month and on all Tuesdays of the Hindu calendar month 'Jyestha', throughout the city stalls/canopies are erected by the corporate houses, businessmen and resident individuals which offer free unlimited chilled sherbet, water and food to all passer-bys. At main places, the menu is also displayed in advance and people visit such stalls to get 'prasad'.

The most common items are 'puri subji ' but a many places sweets like 'bundi or laddu' are also distributed. Many poor people collect 'puris' from many stalls and store it for coming few days.

No individual sleeps hungry at Lucknow during the 'Jyestha' month as the food collected on each Tuesdays serves the purpose throughout the month.

For the first time I am coming across the celebration of distributing food during Jyeshta month on Bada Mangal. Is that prevalent in entire North India or only in Lucknow.?

Mohan Ji, it is an event or celebration peculiar to Lucknow and it is believed that it was started in the year 1718 by the queen Alia Begum.

During construction work in the Aliganj area in Lucknow for a regal building, two statues of God Hanuman were found by the labourers at the site while digging which were kept in one corner of the construction site. Next night in her dreams she heard that - 'install these statues and you will have a child born to you'. She got the statues installed within few days and was 'blessed' with a son. She named him, 'Mangat Rai Firoz Shah'.

The other statue was installed at another place by Jathmal, the commander of Alia Begum in the year 1752. Both the temples are existing even now. The former is known as the 'Purana Hanuman Mandir' and the later is known as the 'Naya Hanuman Mandir'.

Let us encourage each other in sharing knowledge.
