Did you ever do the filter paper test for petrol to check its quality?

The Consumer Protection Act, 1986 says that each petrol pump should supply specially made filter papers to the customers if demanded. By using such a filter paper, we can check petrol quality to know whether it is adulterated or not. When we put one or two drops of petrol on the paper, if the petrol is pure it will evaporate within one or two minutes without leaving any stains on the paper. If the petrol is adulterated, it will leave some stains on the paper. Did you ever do the filter paper test for petrol quality?

Generally, people rarely do filter paper purity test. There are other types of purity tests also which the company officials or the officials of the concerned regulatory departments perform as and when required. The most common type of the other test is density check.

Generally, the petrol pumps in any city attain certain reputation level and people know where to find better quality petrol or diesel. In the major petrol pumps in the bigger cities where the volume of sale is very high, it is likely that such pumps don't resort to malpractices of adulteration and under-measurement etc. as they are in a position to earn enough even without resorting to malpractices on the strength of their turnover alone.

However, on the highways and the rural areas, their economics is based on the malpractices only. The case of merciless killing of Shanmugam Manjunath, the IOCL officer for sealing a corrupt petrol station in Lakhimpur Kheri, UP is a typical reminder of such cases.

Let us encourage each other in sharing knowledge.
