- #578997Being a student of chemistry, I have a particular interest in the subject matter. Ozone layer is a belt of naturally occurring ozone in the atmosphere above 15 to 30 kilometers from the earth's surface. Its chemical formula is O3 and basically, it filters the harmful ultraviolet B radiations emitted by the Sun from entering the atmosphere. Therefore, protecting or non-depletion of the ozone layer is important for the mankind.
Industrial chemicals/gases hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), chlorine and bromine vapors eat away ozone by chemically reacting with it. Therefore, efforts are being made on a global scale to reduce the emission of such ozone-eating gases. Due to depletion of ozone layer, large amounts of ultraviolet B rays are reaching earth, which is likely to cause skin cancer and cataracts in humans/animals and many other harmful effects as well.
Ozone was discovered by the scientist Schönbein in the year 1867. The word 'ozone' literally means 'to smell'. The ozone layer was discovered in the year 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. The ozone layer absorbs 97 to 99 percent of the Sun's medium-frequency ultraviolet light.
Globally, the September 16 is observed as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
