India had 18 arms manufacturing units prior to Independence. Are they closed willfully ?

We all know that Indian Defence expenditure has been on the rise every budget and that is needed too. Due to constant threat from the neighbors and other emergencies, India has been heavily banking on modern arms and ammunition which are imported in big way. But very few Indians know that there were 18 arms manufacturing Units across the country to take care of Defence needs. But they have been closed willfully to pave for imports of modern arms and of course with commission rider on every deal. And for the first time after Independence a private arms manufacturing unit has come up in MP now.

As far as I know, ordnance Factories board is there working with its head office at Kolkata. 18 Ordnance factories are under production in India even today. Are you talking about any other arms manufacturing units, Mr.Mohan. The present existing 18 units are in production of various items required for defence. As the production coming out from these factories is not completely taking care of our requirement, imports are going on.

Nowadays many private players coming in to manufacturing of weapons, missiles and rockets. Many of these units are trying for foreign collaboration with reputed overseas manufacturers. Then India may reduce defence imports and export can be carried out. Starting from L&T , Reliance to Kalyani group are coming forward for this.

I hope if the present trend continues, imports will drastically come down.
