Fashion now a matter of ethics and sustainability also.Fashion industry is now moving Ethics and sustainability fashion. This is also a reflection of the modern society's thinking on environment and sustainability.
Ethical fashion is an omnibus term to describe" ethical fashion design, production, retail, and purchasing. It covers a range of issues such as working conditions, exploitation, fair trade, sustainable production, the environment, and animal welfare."( quote from vam.ac.uk)
Sustainable fashion or Eco fashion is a philosophy in fashion industry " to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of human impact on the environment and social responsibility." Eco fashion is again Green fashion where the fashion product is made with consideration to its environmental impact and social and human impact.
I recall the exhortation of a Swamiji to the people to eschew silk clothes as they are made by cruelty to the silk worms. In western countries there are movements against use of fur and other animal products made inflicting cruelty to animals and birds.
Fast fashion results in exploitation and unsustainability. It puts forth many inhuman and ethical issues. In sustainable fashion, fabrics are dyed using natural dyes, fabrics are made of organic cotton- grown without use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers.
The natural fabric fashion products made from a place Balaramapuram in Kerala are now in high demand in other countries. .Ayur Vastra the eco-friendly medicinal fabric, is developed and introduced by a traditional family with the help of the Handloom Weavers Development Society at Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram. They are made out of organic cotton fabric infused with organic herbs and medicinal plant extracts that promote health and cure special diseases. For giving colours the natural dyes extracted from roots, flowers, leaves, seeds and barks of different herbs are used
Thus today's fashion considers ethics and sustainability also echoing the universal concern.
