    Nritya Samragni: Sitara Devi birthanniversary

I was hoping that someone would post this, I was moved by the fact that this legend's talent was noticed by none other than our Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Today's Google doodle honors Sitara Devi (97th birthday) a Kathak exponent for many years and an Indian legend. In fact, at the age of 16, Rabindranath Tagore called her Nritya Samragni (queen of dance).

She was trained by her father Sukhadev Maharaj in Kathak at a time when girls for good families were not encouraged to learn Kathak. Her entire family, including her father, were ridiculed by people and yet her father persisted in teaching dance. She has performed at many prestigious venues (Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall(and awarded many awards including Padma Shree.
