Let the coming general election be held with online voting through Aadhaar and OTP

There has been deep discussion going on in the government and also with various political parties as to have the single election for the Parliament and state assemblies to reduce the poll expenditures. That is a very good thought. But even better suggestion from my side is very simple and yet effective. Now almost every Indian has the Aadhaar card and let the government through EC announce the Election date. Every one has the mobile phone linked to the Aadhaar and thus with one time OTP he or she can cast vote only through their mobile and the process would be simple, counting would be fast and reliable too. And the main gain is with minimal expenditure. Any takers

Very good thread. Possibly thumb and eye impression is required to post vote. I think it can be done. OTP can create lot of issues like otp is coming on mobile or not. It may take extra time. If OTP mobile number is changed for aadhar etc.

Thanks Rahul. Indian specialists can design such fool proof method that no one can meddle with the rights of the voter nor influence them. What I suggest that each and every voter must be given time in that day to cast vote so that server wont be jammed ?

It is good to have online voting. But how far the country is ready for this next year I don't know. OTP may not be possible because all the people will be trying on the same say within the given time. Otherwise, they should give time and date to each voter and at that time he has to ask for OTP.
Instead of that biometric may be a good proposition. The only thumb may not be possible because as you grow old your thumb making may not be very clear. In such case, eye impression may be suitable. Many problems will get sorted out if this system works out,

Online voting may go wrong at any time. The servers may become slow and inaccessible. The entire process will be thrown out of order. I do not think it feasible at present. It is better to continue with the old system.

Every district would be given a specific time and the voters have to vote at that time only. So there can be adjustment on the servers not to be over loaded. And if any one violates votes not valid.

It would be a good idea and worth considering in the digital age of Modern India. It can be done and would ensure that casting proxy votes would become more difficult.

The problems with this plan would be that we assume that everyone has an Aadhaar card and a mobile phone. Some may not be able to understand the concept of OTP and would need support.Votes for money and external influence would still happen. It would be a great failure if its all done in one go.

It needs to be done in a phased manner, first in a state election, then with preparation and infrastructure in place can be tired at the national level. IT support and logistical planning need utmost attention and a backup plan because there would be some areas/ district where the system would fail due to unresolved glitches.

Natarajan your apprehension may be wrong. The so called wave we expect in every election would be different if my suggestion goes. Let there be a mock polling to test.

This must also be connected with the Mobile No. so that the time a button is pressed the person will come to know through an SMS & any discrepancies can be directly dealt with.
