Chandan Utsav of Lord Narasimha being celebrated today! In Indian mythology, the Narasimharupa was an incarnation of the Lord Vishnu to kill the demon king Hiranyakashap and protected his son Prahlad who was a staunch follower of the Lord in spite of his father's hindrances. Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha temple at Simhachalam near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh is one of the famous temples depicting Lord Narasimha's incarnation. The main deity of the temple is covered by Chandan (paste of sandalwood) as a part of daily ritual and the original form of the idol is not visible to the people. Only on the day of Akshara Thritaya every year, the 'Nijarupa darshan' would be given to the piligrims by removing the year long chandan cover to the deity. Again the next day onwards, it would be covered with chandan daily till the next Akshara Thritiya. It is felt that the anguish Lord after killing Hiranya was made very cool by performing pooja with Chandan.
Thousands of people from various parts of India and from the neighbouring state of Odisha in particular would throng to have Nijarupa Darshan of the Lord after an year long wait for this auspicious day.
