Many Indians might now be dreaming about getting their hands on the iphone for about Rs10000 i.e $199.But the news is that the iphone that will be sold in the US for $199 has been highly subsidized up to even $200.But Indian operators who are giving the connections (airtel & vodafone) have ruled any subsidies in the Indian market. So the iphone will eventually cause around Rs22000 in the Indian market.
That means we have to create a much bigger hole in our pocket to get hold of the coolest phone present.Well that definitely is a bad news

NEW DELHI and SAN FRANCISCO—June 9, 2008—Bharti Airtel and Apple® today announced that they will be bringing the highly anticipated iPhone™ 3G to customers in India later this year. iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast* as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.

Soon customers will be able to purchase iPhone 3G at Airtel Relationship Centers. Details of pricing and availability will be announced at a later date. Airtel customers who wish to receive more information on iPhone 3G can send an SMS with keyword "iPhone" to 54321 (toll-free).

Hi Aromal ,

Its really a shocking news for all those who are expecting the release of the iphone 3g including me.

Whether the service providers (airtel & vodafone) announced the price or any news about the price ?

Where you heard about this? the iphone 3g costs 22000?

No everyone. Don't loose hope yet. According to some Vodafone sources, the iPhone will cost around Rs.9000-15000 for the 8GB model unless the Indian Government really charges a high import duty and levies high taxes on it. Don't worry, these are rumors and they will eventually die down in October when it will be launched in India. Unless something really bad happens, it won't cost above Rs. 20000.

TILL THEN HAPPY SAVINGS TO EVERYONE FOR THE iPHONE!

Hi Ranganathan

Ya it was shocking for me too!

I got this information from a feature in a leading Malayalam news channel. They were telling that Airtel unlike its US and European counterparts were not willing to subsidise the iphone which will result it to cost around Rs20000.But they didnt mention about vodaphone as such but was hinting the same.
